2018 QUARTER 1
First quarter 2018 tax revenues for the four largest state and local government tax categories increased 5.8 percent to
$350.2 billion, from $331.0 billion in the same quarter of 2017.²
State and local governments collect
$136.3 billion in property tax revenue The estimated total for first quarter 2018 state and local property tax rev- enue was $136.3 billion (±4.0 billion).
Local governments collected an esti- mated $132.0 billion of total property tax revenue in the first quarter of 2018, while the state governments collected only $4.3 billion.
Individual income tax collections Individual income tax collections in the first quarter of 2018 shows an increase of 12.8 percent to $107.4 billion (±0.8 billion), from $95.2 billion (±0.4 billion) in the same quarter of 2017.
General sales and gross receipts tax revenue
General sales and gross receipts tax revenue was $96.5 billion (±0.8 billion) in the first quarter of 2018, up 5.0 per- cent from the $91.9 billion (±0.7 billion) collected in the same quarter of 2017.

Corporation net income tax revenue
Corporation net income tax revenue for the first quarter of 2018 was $10.0 billion (±0.05 billion).
The estimate for the same quarter of 2017 was $9.9 billion (±0.04 billion). These totals are not statisti- cally different.
STATE TAX COLLECTIONS CONTINUE TO RISE
Total state tax revenue increased 6.4 percent to
$245.7 billion in the first quarter of 2018, from
$230.8 billion reported in the same quarter of the prior year. Individual income tax, at $97.2 billion, is up 12.8 percent from $86.2 billion in the same quarter of 2017. The second largest category of state tax revenue is general sales and gross receipts taxes, which accounted for $75.2 billion, an increase of 3.5 percent from $72.6 billion the same quarter in 2017. At $7.4 billion, corporation net income tax collections decreased from $7.7 billion the same quarter in 2017, a decline of -4.0 percent.

The majority of the nation’s state tax revenue came from individual income (39.6 percent), and general sales and gross receipts (30.6 percent). Figure 4 illustrates the first quarter percentage distribution of state government revenues by tax type for the nation and the four census regions. In the Northeast, West, and Midwest regions, individual income tax collections accounted for the largest per- centage of tax collections with 52.0 percent, 43.6 percent, and 37.4 percent, respectively.
In the South, general sales and gross receipts taxes were the largest of the four main cate- gories at 40.4 percent.
