Functional Wavelength Control Devices Using Tunable Hollow Optical Waveguide

We present the design and the fabrication procedure for low-propagation-loss and polarization- insensitive hollow waveguides with GaAs/AlAs semiconductor multilayer mirrors for waveguide devices with a wide range of tunability. We achieved a low propagation loss of less than 0.2 dB/cm for the transverse electric (TE) mode by using 32-GaAs/AlAs-pair multilayers. The addition of a phase control layer to the top surface of the mirrors resulted in a low polarization-dependent propagation loss of less than 0.2 dB/cm. We also predict that the propagation constant should be independent of the ambient temperature, resulting in temperature-insensitive photonic waveguide devices, such as optical filters and grating optical demultiplexers. We propose novel micromachined tunable waveguide devices based on hollow optical waveguides. The combination of hollow and mechanical movable elements gives us a large change in the propagation constant of the guided waves in the hollow waveguides.
