국문초록 ABSTRACT
루쉰의 번역활동 및 번역방법 연구
A Study on the Translation Activities and Translation Methods of Lu Xun.
본고의 목적은 루쉰의 번역활동과 번역방법을 고찰하여 루쉰 번역론의 특징을 밝히는 것이다.
루쉰은 1903년에서 1936년까지 33년간 번역활동을 했는데 본고에서는 번역방법의 구축단계에 따 라 모색기, 수립기, 확립기 등으로 나누었다.
주어의 표기는 직역의 방법외에도 동사로 표현 가능함
This thesis is to elucidate the characteristics of Lu Xun's translation theory by reviewing his translation activities and translation methods. Lu Xun engaged in translation activities for 33 years from 1903 to 1936. This thesis divides his career into exploration period, establishment period and settlement period according as how translation activities were conducted.
제1기인 모색기(1903~1908)는 당대 유행 등을 모방하며 자신의 번역방법을 모색하던 시기이다.
제2기인 수립기(1909~1929)는 직역을 번역방법으로 선정한 시기이다. 제3기인 확립기(1930~1936) 는 직역 중에서도 경역(硬譯)을 자신의 번역방법으로 확고하게 주장하던 시기이다. 제2기의 시작 은 1909년 동생 주작인과 함께 번역한 《역외소설집(域外小說集)》에서부터 시작되며, 제3기는 1930년에 집필한 〈‘경역’과 ‘문학의 계급성’〉이라는 장편의 번역평론에서 확인된다.
The first period, exploration period(1903-1908), was the time when he tried to find his own translation style while mimicking the popular translation trend of the times. The second period, establishment period(1909-1929), was the time when he adopted literal translation as his own translation method. The second period started with the publication of 'The Collection of Overseas Novels' co-translated by his younger brother, Zhouzuoren. The third period, settlement period(1930- 1936), was the time when he opted for Rigid Translation among the various translation methods.
The publication of a literary critique, 'Rigid Translation and Classification of Literature' marked the beginning of the third period.
루쉰은 경역의 불가피성에 대해 중국어의 한계와 번역능력의 한계로 직역할 수 없는 것을 원작의 어감에 맞춰 번역하다보면 독자에게는 생경할 수밖에 없다고 하였다. 당시 루쉰은 번역 역시 무 산계급과 유산계급의 투쟁과 밀접한 관련이 있음을 주장하고 경역을 무산계급 혁명을 위한 번역 방법으로 여겼다.
원문의 표현을 다양한 영어표현으로 치환하는 방법
Lu Xun defended Rigid Translation on the ground that limits to Chinese langage and translation capacity rendered literal translation impossible. He argued Rigid Translation, which aimed to convey the nuance of the original text, was inevitable even though it might sound unfamiliar to the readers.
He considered Rigid Translation the translation technique for the proletariat, saying that translating was intricately related to the struggle between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie.
루쉰의 번역방법을 정리하면, 루쉰은 당대 혁명문학작품 및 문예이론 번역의 시급성을 느끼고 ‘중 역(重譯)’을 통해서라도 이를 번역하였으며, 번역은 외국문화의 어감을 보존하되 이해하기 쉬운
‘직역(直譯)’이어야 한다고 주장하였으며, 그중에서도 ‘경역’이 당시 중국의 번역 상황에서는 불가 피한 방법이라고 보았다. 다만 보다 완전한 번역을 위해 번역 작품의 장점을 발전시키는 ‘번역비 평’이 필요하며, 계속적으로 ‘재번역’이 이루어져야 한다고 보았다. 본고에서는 끝으로 경역론의 특징이 ‘구체성’, ‘시대성’, ‘사상과의 연계’ 등임을 밝혔다.
원문의 동사를 축어적으로 번역하기 보다는 문맥에 맞는 동사로 바꿔준다.
In brief, Lu Xin thought that there was a compelling need to translate revolutionary literatures and literary criticisms of the times and translated or sometimes retranslated them. He argued that translation should be literal to be easily understood while at the same time preserving the nuance of the original text. He viewed that the Rigid Translation was the inevitable method in light of the translation circumstances of the times in China.
He was of an opinion that translation criticism was called for to come up with a better translation and translating should be done again and again continually. The thesis referred to 'specificity,' 'contemporary traits,' and 'link between the translation and the thoughts of the times' as the characteristics of Rigid Translation.
