The overall objective was to assess the impacts of wood-grab and cable logging operations on soil disturbance (surface, physical, hydrological properties) and soil loss. Specially, this study sought to: (1)determine the influences of mechanized

logging operations on the surface, physical, hydrological

properties of soils by field observations, (2)evaluate the

applicability of the WEPP model on soil loss estimation for harvested forests with observed data and examine the effect of soil surface disturbance on soil loss, and (3)assess the annul soil loss rates by the wood-grap operations and soil loss variations with soil texture, slope, slope length, and logging method through WEPP model.

First, results showed that the wood-grab logging operation had more deep disturbances, such as topsoil removed, erosion feature, and rutted, and skid-trail areas than the cable logging

risk of soil disturbance was considerably higher than cable logging activity. Concerning soil physical and hydrological properties, our results showed that equipment contact areas, where vehicle traffic was concentrated, had significantly altered the soil bulk density, porosity, and saturated hydraulic conductivity. Particularly, the greatest changes occurred in skid trails compared to undisturbed, rutted, and landing site for tower yarder, since soil layer was destroyed during earthwork activities such as excavating and scrapping, and consolidated by frequent transport of logs.

Second, results indicated that the predicted soil loss rate from WEPP model was not noticeably different with measured data. However, in skid trail, the relative bias had higher(17.6%) than rutted region(14.9%). Therefore, the baseline rill erodibility(Kr)

factor, which is the most important inputs data, to predict for soil loss of skid trail was modified to reach the highest accuracy of the model. After calibration, the effect of soil surface disturbance on soil loss rate measured in this study. Result implied that the skid trail in ground-based logging region had the highest soil loss compared to undisturbed, rutted, landing area, since the forest floor, soil physical and hydrological properties, forest vegetation was destroyed at the time of construction and frequent vehicle passes.

The last part of this study was to find that the wood-grab logging operation was estimated to be the most susceptible to soil loss, producing 24.3 ton/ha/yr of average soil loss rates. It was also classified at the“high”to“severe”level through OECD standard of soil loss. This results emphasize the important influence of the soil disturbance type. In addition, the complex patterns of soil loss reflect the dynamics of interrill and rill erosion as affected by mechanized logging method, soil type,

slope, slope length.

Overall, the WEPP model was found to be a reliable tool for predicting soil loss rates during mechanized logging operation in South Korea. In addition this indicates the necessity of improving post-harvesting conservation techniques to reduce the soil loss potential.
