Definition and overview
Feeding(self-feeding)
Process of setting up, arranging & bring food from the plate or cup to the mouth
Eating
Ability to keep and manipulate food or fluid in the mouth and swallow it
Swallowing
A complex act in which food, fluid, medication, of saliva is moved
from the mouth through the pharynx(인두) and the esophagus(식
Eating= essential occupation
Occurs several times a day
Provides children
Nutritional intake
Learning and interactional experience
Give the child opportunities to
Practice object manipulation: 식기
Experience new sense
Learn how to communicate needs and desires
Children experience problems with feeding, eating, and swallowing
Medical conditions : prematurity, neuromuscular abnormality, structural anomalies, gastroesophageal diseases, 알러지…
Developmental disability

Newborn has
Small oral cavity
Filled with fatty cheeks and the tongue
Successful in sucking from a breast or bottle nipple
Infant
Epiglottis(후두개) and soft palate(연구개)가 인접 larynx 높 이 위치
Liquid from the nipple(젖 or 분유) safely passed from the base of the tongue to the esophagus(식도)
Aspiration is unlikely before 4 months of age : 희박함
As the infant grows
Oral cavity becomes larger and more open
Fatty tongue: thin and muscular
Cheek: lose much or their fatty padding
provide greater control of liquid or food within the mouth
New sucking pattern
Provide room
to masticate food
to move the tongue in the rolling pattern required during chewing
Anatomical structures of the mouth and throat
Anterior faucial arch

Soft Palate
