Climate efforts must be supported by everyone

Copenhagen is to be the Climate Capital of the world. This requires commitment from everyone. To reach this goal we need dialogue and cooperation between authorities, businesses and Copenhageners.

Partnerships with energy companies provide opportunities for long- term, green investments to the benefi t of us all.

Free climate advice and dialogue ensures that companies

become more energy-effi cient. Debate and education will inspire Copenhageners to achieve energy savings.

The vision is a carbon neutral city by 2025.

Unfolding our Visions

Copenhagen’s Climate Plan

Global climate change will have an impact on our capital. We can expect heavy downpours, higher temperatures and a rising sea level around the city.

Preparing the city for climate changes has already begun. Small pocket parks are being established all over town. They absorb rainwater and work as green breathing spaces. Buildings will have green roofs and facades that delay rainwater and reduce the risk of fl ooding.

Green solutions are cheapest and best for Copenhageners.

Reducing CO

2

emissions and preparing the city for the weather of the future will help create a green city with room for urban life - a clean and healthy city. In that way Copenhagen will be an even better place to live.

Copenhagen has a climate plan. With this plan, Copenhagen has taken a major step towards a carbon neutral future. The goal is ambitious, but not unrealistic.

Copenhagen’s CO

2

emissions are to be reduced by 20 % from 2005 to 2015. This corresponds to saving 500.000 tonnes of CO

2

. The CO

2

reduction is to take place in all sectors: energy supply, transport, building-renovation, and urban development.

Copenhagen will achieve these reductions in cooperation with its citizens and companies. Copenhagen is already well under way: We have reduced CO

2

emissions by 20 % since 1990.

Can you imagine a carbon neutral capital?

We can. In this folder you can learn how we will get there.

Transport without smoke and noise

A THIRD OF EVERYONE WORKING OR STUDYING IN COPENHAGEN ALREADY TRAVELS BY BICYCLE. PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS QUICK AND EFFICIENT, BUT THE NUMBER OF CARS IS INCREASING. THIS IS WHY WE WILL MAKE TRAVELLING AROUND IN COPENHAGEN BY METRO, BICYCLE, BUS, AND TRAIN EVEN MORE ATTRACTIVE. FOSSIL-FUELED CARS WILL BE REPLACED BY ELECTRIC AND HYDROGEN-POWERED CARS.

COPENHAGEN’S LARGEST CO2 EMISSIONS COME FROM HEAT AND ELECTRICITY. SO HERE WE MAKE A SPECIAL EFFORT TO REDUCE CO2. ALL HOUSES IN THE CITY ARE ALREADY CONNECTED TO AN ENERGY EFFICIENT DISTRICT HEATING SYSTEM, BUT THE ENERGY SYSTEM CAN BE IMPROVED EVEN MORE. THIS WILL PREVENT WASTE OF HEAT AND ENERGY ALTOGETHER. A GREATER SHARE OF ENERGY WILL COME FROM WIND- MILLS, THE BURNING OF WOOD AND STRAW, AND GEOTHERMAL ENERGY.

COPENHAGENERS ALREADY EMIT FAR LESS CO2 THAN THE AVERAGE DANE. THIS IS DUE TO THE SMALL SIZE OF DWELLINGS IN COPENHAGEN, OUR ENERGY SYSTEM AND OUR USE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND BICYCLES. BUT CLIMATE BEHAVIOUR IN COPENHAGEN CAN STILL BE IMPROVED – BOTH ON THE JOB AND AT HOME. WE WILL STRENGTHEN CLIMATE CONSCIOUSNESS THROUGH INFORMATION, COUNSELLING AND EDUCATION.

RENOVATION OF BUILDINGS IS SOUND BUSINESS. ELECTRICITY BILLS BECOME SMAL- LER AND INDOOR CLIMATE IS IMPROVED. THIS IS WHY THE CITY OF COPENHAGEN AL- READY TAKES A GREEN APPROACH IN BUILDING-RENOVATION AND URBAN PLANNING.

THE NEXT STEP WILL BE TO CREATE CARBON NEUTRAL NEIGHBOURHOODS - DENSELY POPULATED AREAS WITH MINIMAL TRANSPORT NEEDS AND THE STRICTEST POSSIBLE ENERGY SAVING REQUIREMENTS IN DEVELOPMENT.

Copenhagen must be ready for electric and hydrogen-powered cars. The City of Copenhagen will build charging stations and use excess power from the city’s new windmills to charge the cars’ batteries.

We will purchase hundreds of electric and hydrogen-powered cars so employees can get around without the use of petrol.

All children and young people in Copen- hagen will be sustainability-conscious citizens. A new Climate Knowledge Centre will develop new ways of teaching about climate and further educate child care workers and school teachers. Hundreds of young climate ambassadors will advice fa- mily and friends and thousands of children will plant trees in the city’s climate forest.

The City of Copenhagen is leading a large wind turbine project. Four new windmill areas are under consideration in Copenha- gen and more are to come outside the city.

The people and companies in Copenhagen can support the project by buying shares and the City of Copenhagen will buy green power to cover our own consumption.

The City of Copenhagen owns 5 % of all buildings in Copenhagen. These buildings will be renovated in order to meet new energy requirements. This means that ener- gy saving, use of renewable energy and climate adaptation will always be on the agenda when renovating. We will reduce energy bills and at the same time have buildings with less noise, better indoor climate and energy efficient solutions.
