What is the best way to get good seats for a concert? A long wait in line is an experience that concertgoers are likely to recognize. Someone gets up before dawn in order to be first in line. The seats that go with the tickets turn out to be real disappointments, however. A frustrated fan might well ask himself or herself why this happens. Ticket agencies usually give out lottery numbers to determine the customers who get to buy tickets first. As a result, people at the end of the line might get better seats than those at the front. Nothing is more important than when people are trying to get good seats.

Children need to know how to . The ultimate goal of an allowance is to have your child skillfully handle all expenditures before he or she leaves for college. Most experts agree that first grade is a good time to start and they are unanimous in telling parents to adopt an attitude of freedom. We all learn from mistakes and it’s nice if children can do that at a young age when the mistakes are small. A recent online survey showed parents typically give $3 a week to 6 to 8 year-olds and $5 a week to 9 to 11 year-olds. Some experts suggest $1 per year of age. Whatever the amount, it has to be enough so that your child can actually learn to manage it.

We checked the halls. The smoke was thick and white and did not smell like I imagined smoke should smell. Not like your barbecue or your fireplace or even a bonfire. The phones were working. My wife had taken our nine month old for his checkup. I called my maid at home and told her to page my wife, tell her that a bomb went off, I was OK, and on my way out. I took off my T-shirt and ripped it into three pieces. Soaked it in water. Gave two pieces to my friends. Tied my piece around my face to act as an air filter. And we all started moving to the staircase. In the halls there were tiny fires and sparks. The ceiling had collapsed in the men’s bathroom.

When I find myself depressed over present conditions, I enter my library, close my eyes, and walk to certain shelves containing only books on history. I open a book at random. And then I read for an hour; and the more I read, the more sharply I realize that the world has always been in troubles, that civilization has always been in danger. The pages of history fairly shriek with tragic tales of war, famine, poverty, and man’s inhumanity to man. After reading history, I realize that bad as conditions are now, they are infinitely better than they used to be. This enables me to see and face my present troubles in their proper perspective as well as to realize that the world as a whole is constantly growing better.

History full of (A) enables me to face my present difficulties with a(n) (B) view of things.

Stephen Crane never went to war yet he wrote one of the most profound psychological war novels, The Red Badge of Courage(1895). His novel was immensely successful because of its brilliant description of human emotions during battle. It was the first time that a writer described in such detail the life of the common soldier, surrounded by mud, blood and fear of death. With this novel that takes place during the American Civil War(1861-1865), Stephen Crane became one of America’s great writers. He chose to live as a humble writer among very poor people. He wanted to experience the extreme human conditions there so that he could write about them. In June 1900 Crane died of tuberculosis during a trip to Badenweiler, Germany. He was not yet thirty.

Biodiesel refers to a diesel-equivalent fuel derived from biological sources. Though derived from biological sources such as soybean and rapeseed, it’s a processed fuel that can be readily used in diesel engined vehicles. Biodiesel has significantly fewer emissions than petroleum-based diesel when burned. Biodiesel functions in current diesel engines, and is a possible replacement for fossil fuels. Biodiesel also reduces emissions of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Fuel stations are beginning to make biodiesel available to consumers, and a growing number of transport fleets use it as an additive in their fuel. Biodiesel is generally more expensive to purchase than petroleum diesel, but can be made at home for much cheaper than either.

Compared to men, most women tend to move smoothly into retirement without problems and just ‘get on with life’. On retirement, many women join groups to improve their hobbies or interests. They may go back to school, spend more time caring for others or join sporting clubs. Their choice of activities almost always involves interaction with other people. Women usually judge their own self-worth by the quality of their relationships. Studies show that 70-80% of women say the most important priority is their family. As a result, retired women maintain the social networks they have built or slip easily into new ones. They spend the extra time doing the things they have always done or take up new challenges that they never had time for during their working life.

① how women deal with retirement ② conflicts between men and women ③ social problems of early retirement ④ how men and women face family problems ⑤ how men and women build their social networks

Listening is not a passive skill. Rather, listening places many demands on us. When we participate in face-to-face or telephone exchanges, we need to be receptive to others, which includes paying attention to explanations, questions, and opinions. Even when we listen during one-way exchanges― for example, while listening to lectures, films, and musicals― we are active. Consider, for example, how many times you shouted at, laughed at, or agreed with (either out loud or inside your head) a person giving a television commentary on a hot topic. Active listening is even a part of our intrapersonal communication, in which we pay attention to our own thoughts and ideas. For example, consider the last time you talked to yourself. “Where did I put my keys? Oh! There they are!”

① listening as an active skill ② improving communicative skills ③ listening practice through multimedia ④ the importance of face-to-face talking ⑤ the ways to get attention from listeners

When parents demand obedience and rule by fear, kids are taught at a very young age not to express their true feelings. Spontaneous expressions of joy, concern, and happiness are suppressed, because the parents suppress all feelings. Eventually the child becomes so conscious of her parents that no feelings are expressed spontaneously; she must first ‘check in’ with her parents to see if the feeling is okay. Forbidden to express these emotions themselves, kids get stuck in their anger, fear, sadness, and hurt. Sometimes they even refuse to acknowledge that they are angry or hurt and have no way of getting rid of the energy produced by those feelings. The energy builds up inside, like steam pressure in a boiler.

When Clonaris was a buyer, he discovered he had made a huge miscalculation. Clonaris’s account was dry when a Japanese vendor happened to show him a stunning new line of handbags. Clonaris knew he should have set some money aside for such an opportunity. He realized he now had two options: give up the deal, or confess his mistake to the company controller and ask for the money. As Clonaris sat in his office considering his decision, the controller happened to stop by. Clonaris told him, “I’m in trouble. I really blew it.” He explained what had happened. The controller was struck by Clonaris’s honesty and found a way to advance him the money. When the new handbag line went on the market, it was a huge success.

Every day, business is becoming more international. You should learn to make a good impression on foreign colleagues, greet them, get to know them, and negotiate with them. If business does take you to other countries, remember this: there are plenty of opportunities for you to make mistakes, but don’t let that intimidate you. Business people around the world tolerate foreigners’ mistakes more than those of their fellow citizens. Their reaction to your mistakes will more likely be amusement than anger. If you watch what others do, ask questions, and keep an open mind, you can succeed anywhere.

The natural world is far better attuned to the Earth’s magnetic field and to direction than humans. Plants always grow towards the sun-facing south in the northern hemisphere and north in the southern hemisphere. Sunflowers follow the movement of the sun across the sky. Tree rings are often wider on the side facing the sun. Some termite nests are built along a north-south axis. They thus receive maximum warmth in the mornings and evenings, yet are shaded at noon. Some birds can be used as basic direction finders. For example, some species of weaver bird build their nests only on the west sides of trees. If you are in an area where these birds live, they are reliable guides to direction.

The term the Dark Ages was coined by the Italian poet Petrarch in the 1300s. Petrarch loved the culture of the ancient Greeks and Romans and felt that nothing good had happened after the fall of Rome. He saw the Middle Ages as a time of violence, poverty, and ignorance. Today we know that Petrarch was unfair to the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages had their fair share of poverty and warfare, and only a few people could read and write. But all of these problems were common both before and after the Middle Ages. Medieval civilization produced great achievements in government, religion, and art.

I happened to drop a tray of rings while arranging the display stand. Six magnificent diamond rings went rolling across the floor. In haste I collected five rings. I couldn’t find the sixth. I ran around the counter and looked down. It wasn’t there. I saw a tall man moving toward the door of the shop a few yards away. In a flash I was sure that he had the ring; he had been standing at the only spot to which it could have rolled. I reached him as his hand touched the door handle.

“Excuse me, please,” I said. He turned, and I prayed for some way to save the future. “What do you want?” he said. I felt instinctively he hadn’t come into the store intending to steal. He just looked like a jobless person who wanted to get a feeling of better times. “What do you want?” he repeated. Mother had always told me most people were basically kind. I didn’t think this man would want to hurt me.

“This is my first job,” I said. “Jobs are scarce now, aren’t they?” He searched my face intently, then smiled a very gentle smile. “Yes,” he said. “But I’m sure you’ll do very well in yours. May I wish you luck?” He put his hand out and grabbed my hand tightly. “Good luck to you,” I whispered as he opened the door and vanished in the fog. Then I turned and put the sixth diamond ring back into place.
