A Study on participation Characteristics of Marriage Migrants Settlement Support Program and Their
Community Adaptation

Abstract_This thesis investigated the participation characteristics of marriage mi-grants in the settlement support programs offered by government-led Multicultural Family Support Centers and the foreign migrant support organizations run by non-governmental entities. In addition, this thesis measured the life satisfaction of participatory and non-participatory marriage migrants in the settlement support programs to determine whether the participation in settlement support programs exerted influence on the improvement of participants’ life satisfaction and their adaptation to communities. A total of 136 marriage migrants living in Dong-gu, Daegu and Cheongdo-gun Gyeongsangbuk-do were surveyed via multi-cultural family support centers and non-governmental organizations. The analysis found that changes in life satisfaction positively correlated with marriage migrants’ par-ticipation in settlement support programs and that high life satisfaction had sig-nificant effects on their adaptation to communities. Specifically, marriage migrants participating in settlement support programs showed higher life satisfaction than non-participatory marriage migrants. Among participatory marriage migrants, the higher the satisfaction with participation in settlement support programs, the higher the satisfaction with present life. Also, high life satisfaction was found to have positive effects on adaptation to communities. Based on these findings, the present study suggested the needs to develop and provide a variety of settlement support programs to improve marriage migrants’ life satisfaction and adaptation to communities, and relevant directions for betterment of policy supports.
