The purpose ofthis study isto developmentofjob standardsof HospitalInformatics Nurses in Korea.This study was conducted to analyzed the general characteristics and roles of Informatics Nurse.
Surveyofthecurrentstatusofnursinginformationsystemsinhospitals and the importance ofHospitalInformatics nurses'roles as wellas their currentroles were conducted for the managers ofinformation centers,managersofnursing departments,Informaticsnurses,and the nursinginformaticsspecialistgroup.Datawerecollected from 35outof 200hospitalswithover300beds(responserateof17.5%)from May25, 2007toJune20,2007.TheywereanalyzedbyusingSPSSprogram.
Totalof49nursing roleswerecategorized into seven domainsbased on the literature and validated by the specialistgroup.They were:
administration, analysis, compliance and integrity management, coordination, consultation, facilitation and integration, development, educationalandprofessionaldevelopment,andresearch.
Theresultswereasfollows;
First, only 18 out of 35 hospitals were implementing nursing information systems. Roles of Informatics Nurse were exclusively nursinginformaticsfor10hospitalsand notexclusivefortheremaining 8hospitals. Theseweresignificantly related with thesizeofhospitals.
Second,the degree of informatics work performance for Informatics Nurses were significantly better for hospitals with EMR (electronic medicalrecords)than those with CPOE(computerized physician entry system)only. Third,degreeofnurse’sperceptionofnursinginformatics was35.2%,acquisition ofknowledgewas26%,and educationaldemand was68.8%.Especially,educationaldemand on theinformaticswasvery high. Fourth,average score ofthe importance ofnursing informatics rolewas4.04±0.59, thedomainofcoordination,consultation,facilitation and integration was 4.17±0.60, administration was 4.09±0.59, and anaylsis was 4.04±0.72. Fifth,the degree ofwork performance and these importance scores were positively correlated for all domains except research. Finally,important role domains were consultation, coordination,facilitation and integration.And thesewerealso areasof highperformanceforinformaticsnurses.
Wealsofound thatdemand forbettereducationwashigh. However,
professionaleducation program aboutnursing informaticsisinadequate and therefore there isa need forthe professionaleducation program organized by the Korean Nurses Association or Hospital Nurses Association. Thefindingsofthisstudy islimited by a low response rateandthereforethefuturestudyincludemorehospitals.
