고 19세기 당시 미국 도시의 모순을 극복할 비전을 제시했던 문화 창조자 로 옴스테드를 평가한다.
옴스테드와 관련된 다학제적 연구에는 도시사의 관점에서 19-20세기 도 시 공원을 연구한 조지 채드윅(George Chadwick),30) 사회정치사적 측면에 서 미국 공원을 해석한 갈렌 크랜츠(Galen Cranz)31)의 연구가 있다. 본즈 스츠겔(Bonz Szczygiel)과 로버트 휴이트(Robert Hewitt)32)의 논문은 옴스 테드의 공원이 위생 시설로써 기능한 점을 조명하고 있다. 위 연구들은 옴 스테드가 조경계에 미친 영향뿐 아니라 미국 사회 전반에 미친 영향을 함께 고려할 수 있게 한다.
위 연구들을 통해 옴스테드의 전반적인 생애와 철학, 자연관을 알 수 있 었다. 본 연구는 그가 설정한 공원의 사회적 역할과 기능을 탐색하고 복지 적 시선으로 그를 재해석한다.
