Relationship Between Director Leadership of Community Mental Health Center and Organizational Effectiveness

This study was intended to investigate leadership types of the directors of community mental health centers located in Gyeonggi province and measure organizational effectiveness of members, and thereby analyze the differences between groups and the influence of the leadership on organizational effectiveness. To achieve the purposes, this study was conducted on 215 people working at 32 mental health centers in Gyeonggi province. On the basis of the main results of this study, the author came to the following conclusion.

First, it was found that the leadership of the directors of mental health centers recognized by the study subjects was transformational leadership rather than transactional leadership.

Secondly, since the organizational effectiveness of the members at the mental health centers appeared different according to their demographical and organizational features, it was implied that the

directors needed to give careful consideration to the members and exert individual leadership, and especially that given the high turnover intention, they should come up with measures and make an effort in managing their human resources.

Third, the leadership type of the head directors had a positive correlation with job satisfaction and organizational committment of organizational effectiveness, and had a negative correlation with turnover intention.

Fourth, regarding the influence of the leadership of the directors on organizational effectiveness, the transformational leadership significantly affected job satisfaction and turnover intention, but never influenced organizational committment. The transactional leadership influenced only organizational committment. Therefore, it was found that the proper combination of transactional leadership and transformational leadership could lead to the increase in organizational effectiveness.

It is necessary to examine the validity of the measurement tool used in this study, and the study target area was limited to Gyeonggi province so that it was impossible to make this study generalize. In addition, the concept of organizational effectiveness used in the community mental health area should be defined, but the indices of organizational effectiveness in this study were limited to organizational committment, job satisfaction and turnover intention.

In addition, the abilities and perception levels of organizational members, which are expected to influence organizational effectiveness of leadership were excluded in this study.

Nevertheless, this is the first study on the leadership of the directors of community mental health centers, and serves a role in proposing the roles and directions of the leaders by investigating relations between organizational members and organizational effectiveness.
