Gender?dependent association between the metabolic syndrome and arterial stiffness in Korean adults.

Gender?dependent association between the metabolic syndrome and arterial stiffness in Korean adults.

PWV is a non - invasive method for predicting cardio - vascular morbidity 27) and mortality . 3) However , PWV has been known to be significantly affected by many factors , especially BP . 11) The CAVI was developed to obtain a BP - independent arterial stiffness index . 11 , 20) The index is calculated from the heart - ankle PWV , adjusted for BP based on stiffness parameter β . Stiffness parameter β represents the BP change required to expand the diameter of the artery . Therefore , arterial stiffness index measured by CAVI is not affected by BP and quantitatively reflects arteriosclerosis of the aorta , femoral and tibial arteries . High CAVI may indicate that the atherosclerotic process is already well established . And it has been demonstrated that CAVI correlates positively with increased carotid intima - media thickness ( IMT ) and a presence of carotid plaque . 12) Studies have found that CAVI was strongly associated with the presence of severe coronary arteriosclerosis 2) and could be used as a screening tool for arteriosclerosis . 28)

ized as a small town with rural villages, so the diet in this area may not represent that in other areas in Korea. Forth, meat or red meat consumption was estimated by a validated FFQ, but measurement error especially from random within-person variation was possibly present [23]. Also, quantitative meat intake could not be additionally analyzed because of limited data availability. Last, although we used statistical methods to eliminate confounding factors of meat consumption in relation to carotid atherosclerosis, residual confounding beyond the considered confounders may alter the association.

Relationship between coffee consumption and stroke risk in Korean population: the Health Examinees (HEXA) Study

Relationship between coffee consumption and stroke risk in Korean population: the Health Examinees (HEXA) Study

The major strength of this study is its inclusion of a large number of subjects and stroke cases, which provided high statistical power for the analysis of the association between coffee consumption and stroke prevalence. The present study is the first to explore the association between coffee consumption and the prevalence of stroke in a Korean population. Although it was cross-sectional, these results have value as the coffee consumption patterns of Koreans particularly intake level and preparation method – differ from those of other populations. Koreans do not drink de- caffeinated coffee, and they often drink instant coffee with sugar and powdered creamer. A previous study suggested that consumption of coffee prepared in this manner is asso- ciated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome risk in Koreans [44]. Although the coffee consumption data in the present study included coffee prepared in this manner, cof- fee intake was inversely associated with the risk of stroke.

Chicken consumption and insulin resistance in non-diabetic older adults

Chicken consumption and insulin resistance in non-diabetic older adults

Prevention. The clinical characteristics of study population such as age, BMI, blood pressure, metabolic markers such as fasting blood glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, QUICKI, TC, HDL-C, TG, LDL-C, SBP, DBP and dietary intake were presented by simple descriptive method after weighting all values without any adjustment. All values were compared by general linear model in complex sample analysis. Study population were divided into three groups by chicken consumption: ‘rarely’ (almost none), ‘monthly’ (> 1/month), and ‘weekly’ (> 1/week) according to the self-administered questionnaire. Metabolic parameters were compared after adjusting for age [17], BMI [18], education [19], job [20,21], smoking [22], alcohol consumption [23], physical activity [18], protein intake, fat intake, and carbohydrate intake [24], and menopause, oral contraceptive, hormone replacement therapy in case of women reported to be risk factors for insulin resistance. In addition, study population was divided into groups by carbohydrate consumption (tertiles: < 65.0, 65.0–75.8, > 75.8% of total calorie for men; < 72.4, 72.5–80.8, > 80.9% for women) and determined the association of chicken consumption with the HOMA-IR and QUICKI in each group after proper adjustment. To elucidate the relationship of chicken consumption with insulin resistance further, odds ratios (ORs) of having the abnormal HOMA-IR (cutoff value = 2.34) [25] and QUICKI (cutoff value

in RA patients suffering from periodontitis. For further meaningful results, a prospective study comparing RA indices, including serum antibody levels, between baseline and after periodontal treatment might be necessary, as well as a study investigating the correlations of more specific serum antibodies related to Pg. Further research in these directions may be helpful not only for defining the association of these 2 diseases pathobiological, but also for evaluating the clinical implications of this relationship.

Association between metabolic syndrome and gallbladder polyps in healthy Korean adults

Association between metabolic syndrome and gallbladder polyps in healthy Korean adults

Thus, it seems likely that the prevalence of GB polyps is increas- ing. However, rare research has been conducted on the associa- tion between metabolic syndrome and GB polyps in Korea. This study aimed to evaluate the association between ele- ments of metabolic syndrome and GB polyps found by abdom- inal ultrasonography. The study also assessed the association between other possible risk factor that impact GB polyps in or- der to determine if there is an association between the meta- bolic indices and GB polyps, the risk factor of gallbladder can- cer. Ultimately, this will help determine whether metabolic syndrome is related to GB polyps or not in Korean population, and we can make use of this result to our medical knowlege base.

Measures of muscle mass and fat mass in the identification of metabolic abnormalities in older Korean adults

5. Association between muscle mass and fat mass and metabolic abnormalities Table 6, 7, 8 and 9 shows association between tertile of muscle mass and fat mass and metabolic abnormalities using multiple logistic regression analysis in each sex. In men, body fat and body fat/Ht² were associated with all of the metabolic abnormalities, and further adjustment for muscle mass and potential confounders were significantly associated with all of the metabolic abnormalities. The highest tertile of body fat and body fat/Ht² were 17.29 and 16.43 times, respectively, more likely to have an increased risk of metabolic syndrome than those in lowest tertile. In contrast, ASM and ASM/Ht 2 were associated with low HDL cholesterol and metabolic syndrome, but after adjustment for body fat and potential confounders the association was significant with low HDL cholesterol (ASM; OR = 2.24, 95%

The association of vitamin D and urine microalbumin/creatinine and obesity in Korean adults

Abstract The present study was conducted to assess the association between serum ferritin and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean women. The data of a total of 9,256 adults (4,196 premenopausal women and 4,340 postmenopausal women) aged ≥ 20 years from the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V) (2010–2012) were analyzed. The key study results were as follows: First, in women without MetS, after adjusting for related variables (age, smoking, alcohol consumption, regular exercise, SBP, DBP, WM, TC, TGs, HDL-C, FPG, Hb, Hct, and Fe), vitamin D status was positively associated with serum ferritin levels (premenopausal, p < 0.001; postmenopausal, p = 0.027). Second, in women with MetS, after adjusting for related variables, vitamin D status was not associated with serum ferritin levels (premenopausal, p = 0.739; postmenopausal, p = 0.278). In conclusions, vitamin D status was positively associated with serum ferritin levels in women without MetS but not in women with MetS.
