1D and 2D petroleum system modeling was performed on twenty-one wells and nine sections in the Song Hong basin located in the northwestern part of the South China Sea.
The result reveals clearly two petroleum systems in the basin: Dinh Cao-Phu Cu(.) Petroleum System and Song Huong-Bien Dong(.) Petroleum System. Dinh Cao-Phu Cu(.) petroleum system covers most parts of the northern and central Song Hong basin with Oligocene shale and coaly shale source rocks of Dinh Cao formation, which is dominated by type II-III kerogens.
The hydrocarbon generation started at 13 Ma from deep Oligocene strata located in the centre of the basin, then migrated laterally and up dip toward marginal areas where Middle Miocene sandstones of Phu Cu formation are present as major reservoirs. The models show the critical moment at about 3.5 Ma. Song Huong-Bien Dong(.) Petroleum System is identified in limited areas of the central and southern Song Hong basin. The major source rock of this petroleum system is Lower Miocene dark claystones of Song Huong formation which contain gas prone, type III kerogen. The migration models show that hydrocarbons were generated from the source rocks in the center of the basin at about 12 Ma, and migrated updip through sand bodies of Quang Ngai formation to the major boundaries faults, and further moved into highly permeable up-dipping units, the Bien Dong formation. The best depiction of the generation-migration-accumulation of hydrocarbons occurs at about 2 Ma.
