PERMANENT MISSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA GENEVA

The 15th Session of the UPR Working Group <Check against delivery>

Review of Mali

Geneva, 22 January, 2013

Statement of the Republic of Korea Thank you, Mr. President.

My delegation welcomes the Delegation of Mali and expresses special gratitude for its active participation in the UPR process despite the present state of emergency in the country.

Expressing grave concerns over the situation in the northern Mali which has created a large number of refugees as well as severe threat to the food security of vulnerable persons, we sincerely hope for a quick resolution of the crisis and emphasize the importance of continued support by the international community to stabilize the region.

We also expect the Government of Mali make strong efforts to ensure the fundamental principle of the rule of law, the freedom of expression of its citizens and the right of property of foreign nationals, even within the context of the emergency situation.

Keeping these in mind, we would like to offer the three following recommendations:

First, condemning serious human rights violations by the armed groups in the northern Mali, we recommend the Government of Mali take measures to hold accountable its perpetrators and to offer redress to the victims in this region.

Second, we recommend the Government of Mali take strong measures to prevent human rights violations and abuses by its own security forces and conduct investigations on alleged human rights violations by the security forces since March of 2012

Third, to avoid the potential instability by tribal disputes, we recommend the Government of Mali come up with sustainable and comprehensive measures to ensure lasting peace among tribal groups. Thank you Mr. President. /End/
