A New Approach to Physics Problem Solving by Focusing on the Development of the House Model

Many researchers have studied physics problem-solving strategies. However, most previous prob- lem solving strategies have limits; they consider problem-solving procedures as simple/linear pro- cedures and they rarely consider problem-solving strategies in upper-level physics. For this reason, we tried to develop a new physics problem-solving strategy, namely, ‘The House Model’, empha- sizing the following several points: recent cognitive psychology theory, steps to understand and visual a problem, and recognition of a process for solving the problem at a glance. The House Model had been used in upper-level mechanics courses from 2004 to 2008. During that period, we had collected students’ feedback about the House Model, and we had modified the House Model.
The final version of the House Model consists of six steps; visualizing, knowing, finding, planning, executing, and checking. The House Model can help students establish physics problem-solving strategies systematically and help researchers analyze/understand students’ difficulties in solving physics problem.
