House panel bent on pursuing impeachment rap vs Sereno
The chairman of the House Committee on Justice said yesterday they are dead set on endorsing the Articles of Impeachment against Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno in December.
Oriental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali, chairman of the House Committee on Justice said his panel remains on track in immediately disposing the impeachment complaint against the Chief Justice. He said they will resume the impeachment hearings against Sereno after the Philippines’ hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and related meetings.

Marawi evacuees return to site of first battle
Thousands of residents of Barangay Basak Malutlut where the bloody siege of Marawi began on May 23 have returned to their homes after being forced out by the fighting between government forces and Islamic militants for five months.
Regional Assemblyman Zia Alonto Adiong, head of the Marawi Crisis Management Committee, said authorities have allowed the return of the residents after the military declared some of the areas in Marawi City safe from booby traps and unexploded bombs, including Basak Malutlut.

Duterte picks Harry Roque as new spokesman
President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Kabayan Rep. Harry Roque as his new spokesperson, saying they were a good match because both of them had “naughty mouths.”
The fast-talking former law professor at the University of the Philippines served as a human rights lawyer before running for a congressional seat as Kabayan representative. Roque supported the presidential candidacy of former Vice President Jejomar Binay in last year’s election.

PH seeks new tack on NKorea crisis
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Tuesday called on global powers to come up with a new approach to resolving the North Korean nuclear crisis, saying the sanctions imposed on Pyongyang were not working.
“I think some of the major players in that area, the United States, China, and Russia need to come up with another approach to reach out to North Korea,” Lorenzana said in a news conference after a meeting between defense ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and other countries.
