독해와작문 능률(양현권) 04과 본문2 해석 ①

Gestures across the Globe

지구를 가로지르는 몸짓 Part ①

① Imagine that you are abroad and you are looking for a restroom.

① 여러분이 해외에 있고 화장실을 찾고 있다고 가정해 봅시다.

② The problem is you don’t speak the language.

② 문제는 여러분이 그 언어를 말하지 못한다는 것입니다.

③ What would you do in this situation?

③ 이런 상황에서 당신을 무엇을 할 것입니까?

④ You would probably try to use your hands, arms, face, head, or any other parts of your body to deliver your message.

④ 여러분은 아마도 당신의 메시지를 전달하기 위해 여러분의 손, 발, 얼굴, 머리 또는 여러분의 다른 어떤 부분을 사용하려 고 노력할 것입니다.

⑤ When you encounter a language barrier, gestures are an obvious alternative to illustrate your points.

⑤ 당신은 언어 장벽과 우연히 만날 때, 몸짓은 여러분의 의미를 설명하기 위한 명백한 대안입니다.

⑥ These movements may seem like the simplest way to communicate, but a gesture in one culture might not have the same meaning as that gesture in another culture.

⑥ 이러한 동작들은 아마도 의사소통을 하는 가장 간단한 방식처럼 보일지도 모릅니다, 하지만 한 문화의 몸짓은 다른 문화 에서 그 몸짓과 같은 의미를 가지지 않을지도 모릅니다.

⑦ In other words, your gestures may seem like nonsense to others, so they might think you are weird.

⑦ 다른 말로 하면, 여러분의 몸짓은 다른 사람들에게 말도 안 되는 것처럼 보일지도 모릅니다, 그래서 그들이 당신이 이상 하다고 생각할지도 모릅니다.

⑧ On some occasions, they might feel offended by your gestures even if you didn’t mean to cause offense.

⑧ 어떤 경우에는, 그들은 비록 당신이 기분 상함을 일으킬 의도가 아니었을 지라도 당신의 몸짓에 의해 불쾌해할지도 모릅 니다.

Part ②

➊① For instance, nodding your head means “yes” in most cultures, but you should be cautious because this is not universal.

① 예를 들면, 당신의 머리를 끄덕이는 것은 대부분의 문화에서는 “예”를 의미합니다, 하지만 여러분은 이것이 보편적이 아 니기 때문에 조심해야 합니다.

② In Turkey, Greece, and Bulgaria, a head nod actually means “no.”

② 터키, 그리스, 그리고 불가리아에서, 머리 끄덕임은 사실은 “아니오.”를 의미합니다.

③ In Japan, it carries another meaning.

① 일본에서는, 그것은 또 다른 의미를 전달합니다.

④ A nod given by a Japanese person signifies that he or she is listening and wants you to continue speaking.

④ 일본 사람에 의해 주어진 끄덕임은 그 혹은 그녀가 듣고 있으며 당신이 말을 계속하기를 원한다는 것을 의미합니다.

⑤ Even if the Japanese person does not agree with your opinion, he or she will still nod to keep the conversation going.

⑤ 비록 일본 사람이 당신의 의견과 동의하지 않더라도, 그 혹은 그녀는 여전히 대화를 계속하기 위하여 여전히 고개를 끄 덕일 것입니다.

⑥ This can be a source of misunderstanding when the speaker thinks a nod means “I agree with you,” but it actually means “I want to hear more.”

⑥ 이것은 말하는 사람이 끄덕임이 “나는 당신과 동의합니다,”를 의미한다고 생각할 때 오해의 원인이 될 수 있습니다, 하지 만 그것은 사실 “나는 더 듣기를 원합니다.”를 의미합니다.

➋⑦ The movements themselves are not the only thing that can vary across cultures.

⑦ 동작 그 자체는 문화에 따라 다를 수 있는 유일한 것은 아닙니다.

⑧ The frequency with which a person uses gestures is also influenced by his or her culture.

⑧ 사람이 몸짓을 사용하는 빈도도 또한 그 혹은 그녀의 문화에 영향을 받습니다.

⑨ Exaggerated gestures for emphasis and explanations are common in certain cultures.

⑨ 강조와 설명을 위한 과장된 몸짓은 어떤 문화에서는 흔합니다.

⑩ For example, people in France, Spain, and Italy have a tendency to use a lot of gestures when speaking.

⑩ 예를 들면, 프랑스, 스페인, 그리고 이탈리아에서 사람들은 말하고 있을 때 많은 몸짓을 사용하는 경향을 가지고 있습니다.

⑪ In fact, hand gestures are so important for Italians that they might even pull off the road while driving to continue a conversation.

⑪ 사실, 손짓은 이탈리아 사람들에게 매우 중요해서 그들은 심지어 대화를 계속하기 위해 운전하는 동안 도로를 벗어날지 도 모릅니다.

⑫ It is nearly impossible for them to talk without using their hands.

⑫ 그들이 그들의 손을 사용하지 않고 이야기하는 것은 거의 불가능합니다.

Part ③

➊① On the contrary, there are many cultures where the use of gestures is highly restricted.

① 대조적으로, 몸짓의 사용이 매우 제한된 많은 문화가 있습니다.

② Speakers in England, Germany, and some other northern European countries seem stiff and frozen compared to their southern neighbors.

② 영국, 독일, 그리고 몇몇 다른 북유럽 국가들에서 말하는 사람들은 그들의 남부 이웃들에 비해서 경직되고 냉담해 보입니다.

③ In some parts of East Asia, body movement is kept to a minimum as a sign of politeness.

③ 동아시아 몇몇 지역에서, 몸동작은 예절바름의 표시로써 최소한으로 유지됩니다.

④ In fact, excessive gestures can be considered aggressive in these cultures.

④ 사실, 과도한 몸짓은 이러한 문화에서 공격적으로 여겨질 수 있습니다.

⑤ Owing to these differences, these people may consider those who use a lot of gestures to be rude and lack self-control.

⑤ 이러한 차이점들 때문에, 이 사람들은 많은 몸짓을 사용하는 사람들을 무례하고 자제력이 부족하다고 여길지도 모릅니다.

⑥ On the other hand, those who use many gestures may find those who don’t dull and restrained.

⑥ 반면에, 많은 몸짓을 사용하는 사람들은 그렇지 못한 사람들을 따분하고 억제되어 있다고 여길지 모릅니다.

➋⑦ Effective communication is not just about verbal communication but also about the gestures we use.

⑦ 효과적인 의사소통은 언어적 의사소통에 관한 것뿐만 아니라 우리가 사용하는 몸짓에 대한 것이기도 합니다.

⑧ Making mere assumptions about a person’s intentions based on gestures can cause misunderstandings if we do not take into account the person’s cultural background.

⑧ 몸짓을 바탕으로 사람의 의도에 대해 단지 가정을 하는 것은 만약에 우리가 그 사람의 문화적 배경을 고려하지 않는다면 오해를 일으킬 수 있습니다.

⑨ Hence, understanding cultural differences in gesture use can help us improve communication and avoid confusion or offense.

⑨ 그러므로, 몸짓 사용에서 문화적 차이점을 이해하는 것이 우리가 의사소통을 향상하고 혼란이나 불쾌감을 피하도록 도울 수 있습니다.
