Basic knowledge in thermodynamics, energy systems and their control,

ideally also in basic components of building systems (e.g. heat pumps) students must be enrolled during internship (company rule)

Work Offered

The Company is an interdisciplinary Swiss research institute for applied sciences and technology. As part of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology Domain, it is an institution of the Swiss federation. The Company is hosting a large research and innovation platform called NEST at its campus. This platform represents a vertical district structurally holding several buildings and connecting them to all different kinds of energy services through an energy hub. The infrastructure allows researchers and industry members to test and evaluate novel technologies and solutions within the built environment in real- scale. One experimental building comprised within NEST is the so called "Solar Fitness and Wellness" Unit. This building providing a Spa space is taking up the challenge of minimizing the use of high grade energy for the operation of saunas, steam baths and the like and to cover as much of the energy demand by renewable sources. There is a great potential as today's systems fully rely on direct electric heating. For the commissioning and operational optimization of the unit we are looking for a student with a mechanical engineering background (or similar) with basic knowledge in thermodynamics/energy systems and ideally some knowledge about building systems and basic components such as e.g. heat pumps. A further requirement is a basic understanding of control.

Your work is at the interface between research and practice with a stronger emphasis on the practical side.

Specific tasks involve:

- Retrieve and prepare data from our data bases for data analysis - Data analysis and performance evaluation

- Implementing control strategies into a simulation model

- Performance optimization running different model settings and evaluating real installation for different set of parameters and control strategies - Hardware/components update

Work Offered

Internship : Polymer Electrolyte Water Electrolysis

Polymer electrolyte water electrolysis represents one of the most promising technologies to overcome the challenges of renewable energy integration.

Dynamic operation paired with high product purity to convert fluctuating electrical surplus energy in chemical storable energy in form of hydrogen. Operation cost of 70% is the main cost driver and therefore system efficiency represents the essential parameter for successful market integration. The aim of the project focuses on optimization of one of the key subcomponents namely the porous transport layers, providing two heat and charge transport as well as two phase transport of gas and water between flow field and catalyst layers. Recent studies revealed the interference of PTL and catalyst layer affects the three main electrochemical losses related to kinetics, charge and fluid transport. A systematic investigation of governing PTL design properties/interface properties between PTL and catalyst layers and related fundamental transport processes will be characterized.

Preliminary Content

-use of differential cells (4cm2), liquid fed electrolysis testbench -electrical impedance measurements

-polarization curve analysis

-automatized spray coating of catalyst layers

-controlled parameter variation of PTLs e.g. additive manufacturing Profile

Deep learning a “virtual guidedog”

In this project a person wearing a headmounted 3D video camera and an inertial measurement unit (records orientation and acceleration) will walk around city streets while we record data. We will then attempt to predict the data from the inertial sensor from the video data. When the video and inertial data are from the same instance in time then prediction is trivial, for example uniform leftward motion in the camera image would predict that the inertial sensor will report rightward rotation. The interesting question is how far ahead can we predict the output of the inertial sensor from the video image. Or in other words, how far ahead can we predict the behaviour of a person by knowing what they are looking at? For example, if there is an obstacle ahead of the person we would expect the person to turn left or right as they approach the obstacle. Therefore an visible obstacle in the video image would predict a rotation signal from the inertial sensor several seconds later. But what other features in the scene (picked up by the video camera) predict changes in the inertial sensor output (which results from movement of the person)? If we could build a system that successfully predicts future changes in the movement of the person then such a system could be used as a “virtual guidedog” to tell a person with limited vision (due either to a clinical problem with vision or poor visibility) when to stop, change speed or change direction. This project will use first calculate action relevant quantities across the image such as the distance, time- to-contact and trajectory direction of objects within the scene and then apply modern deep learning approaches. The student will have the opportunity to interact with PhD students and postdocs who use deap learning and to work alongside people working on our recent EPSRC funded project on predictive vision systems.
