18 July 2012
A special classical concert celebrating the 50 years of diplomatic relationship between Korea and New Zealand was held at the Town Hall in Auckland on 9 July and at the Opera House in Wellington on 12 July. The ‘Korea-New Zealand Friendship Concert’ was hosted by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism and the Korea Culture & Information Service, and was organised by a non-profit organisation in Korea ‘Art With The Future’. At his congratulatory speech in Wellington, Ambassador Mr Yongkyu Park said the Concert was a symbol of the harmony and partnership between the two countries and peoples.
For this event, 80 members of United Korean Orchestra visited New Zealand led by Mr Sung En Park Conductor of Busan City Orchestra. The beautiful voice of harmony between Korean Soprano Mi Hae Park and New Zealand Tenor Chase Douglas lightened the stage. It was followed by Korean traditional singer Sa Ik Jang’s performances that received continuous applause from the audience. Another highlight of the Concert was the United Korean Orchestra’s performance of ‘People of the Sea’, a wonderful music piece composed by Igelese Ete, a New Zealand composer who was acclaimed with his music for films ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’ and ‘The Hobbit’ (to be released 2012/13).
KOREANZ Choir comprises 70 Korean community members in Wellington, also performed on stage at the finale of the Concert, and sang ‘Korea Fantasy’, ‘Arirang’ and ‘Pokarekare Ana’.

The Michelangelo Pistoletto Band are the first participants in City Gallery Wellington’s North Programme. Based in Seoul, artists Eunji Cho and Bona Park maintain separate art practices but work collaboratively as the Michelangelo Pistoletto Band. The band writes and performs electro-pop love songs dedicated to the changing landscapes of South Korea, especially the regions of Daebu-island, Seongam-island, the port city of Incheon, and Seoul itself. Their songs convey the melancholy of landscapes rendered increasingly strange and alien through ongoing urban development.
This exhibition consists of six music videos made over the last two years, including the premiere of two new works. Park and Cho independently write a song for each location, before collaborating on the videos and performances. It is important to the band that their individual artistic practices are maintained but can come together, especially in light of a recurrent theme of their work—a questioning of the voice that the individual can find in an increasingly industrialised and globalised world.
The band’s live performances extend these concerns and generally take place inside the contested landscapes they sing to: within or in front of vacated buildings, on urban rooftops, or on bus routes that connect particular communities. The band will perform at City Gallery on 7 August as part of a four-venue tour of New Zealand. Generously supported by Asia:
New Zealand Foundation and SPARK International Festival, the Michelangelo Pistoletto Band Tour is a joint initiative between City Gallery Wellington and the Calder & Lawson Gallery, University of Waikato, Hamilton.
