Anesthetic gas from a vaporizer is connected via tubing to the scavenger unit and passed to a mask covering the animal’s nostrils. Gases are removed from the mask and the immediate vicinity by vacuum in an outer mask.
The scavenger is supplied with two rat masks with tubing. Other masks for guinea pigs, cats, and rabbits are sold separately and listed below. Disposable Fluosorber canisters will absorb 200 gms of isofl urane, halothane or sevofl urane.

This table-top instrument includes both Oxygen and Nitrous Oxide flow meters for 1-1000 cc/min flow rates, suitable for rodents. Using nitrous oxide mixed with the anesthetic gases allows smaller doses of either than would be required alone.
Both flowmeters and a vaporizer are mounted on a base with a drawer for storage. N2O dilutes the oxygen and reduces oxidative damage to tissues.
This instrument is for open circuit use only, and must be used with the animal under a hood or with a scavenger such as the 50206 scavenger described on the previous page.

Open Circuit Gas Anesthesia Systems
Stoelting has confi gured an open circuit system (without absorption chamber or breathing bag) for scientists who work only with rodents and small animals.The tidal volumes of small (<7kg) animals do not allow for an absorption chamber and recycling. A slow fl ow of gas from the vaporizer output is released at the animal’s nose.
The tabletop model has the same specifi cations as its 5-legged stand counterpart. It offers a smaller footprint (16” x 7.5”) than competitive instruments, and a lower price.
This instrument can be used with the animal under a hood, or with a scavenger such as the 50206 Scavenger offered on the previous page. The open circuit systems include a lower volume fl owmeter (1-1000 cc) that provides better resolution when working only at low fl ows suitable for rodents. Special masks for stereotaxic surgery (51609 and 51610) are available. The 50201, 50251 and 52213 are furnished complete with a 5-legged, wheeled stand for easy transport.

Yokes

Euthanasia Chamber

Ventilator For Perinatal Rodents
Stoelting’s newly designed ventilator is compact, quiet, lightweight and virtually vibrationless. Thus, they may be positioned directly next to the animal, eliminating tidal volume error due to system compliance.
While it was designed specifi ally for mice, the MiniVent can be used for any animals (e.g. birds and perinatal rats) which require tidal volumes in the range of 30-350 ul. The MicroVent Ventilator is the ideal ventilator for very small animals, even perinatal mice, which require tidal volumes in the range of 0-130 ul. Both feature respiratory rates of 60-400 breaths per minute.

The MicroVent and MiniVent are constant volume respiration pumps operating on the Starling principle. Unlike conventional units for larger animals, these ventilators employ a rotary plunger and have no valves. During each ventilation cycle, the plunger performs a synchronized forward and rotating movement. Cleverly arranged bores and channels in the cylinder and plunger control inspiration and expiration during each stroke of the plunger.
A multi-gas inlet adapter is available so that alternate gas mixtures and nebulized substances are delivered to the inlet port at atmospheric pressure. The adaptor provides ports for multiple selectable gas mixtures (hypoxic, anesthetic, etc.) and a port for the Aerosol Nebulizer.
Each ventilator comes complete with: one AC wall mounted power supply (115 or 220V); two silicone tubings, 1.5mm I/D, 3.0 mm O/D, I4 cm length; one 1.3mm O/D tracheotomy Cannula; one 1.2 OD Intubation Cannula.

The tidal volume can be varied continuously throughout its range during operation without interrupting ventilation.
The expired air can be recovered at the collection ports for sampling, recycling or generating a positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP). Room air or any non-explosive gas mixture can be used to feed the pump intake.
Larger ventilators produce large tubing and instrument dead space volumes. This introduces greater system compliance issues which can affect the accuracy with which the full tidal volume is introduced into the animal’s lungs. These ventilators reduce the tidal volume error due to system compliance to 3 ul.
