Weekly rainfall and river flow summary

Weekly bulletin: Wednesday 20 to Tuesday 26 September 2017

Summary: Another week of varied conditions across different parts of England.

River flows remain normal or higher for the time of year at almost all indicator sites.

Rainfall

Rainfall totals for the past week ranged from 7mm in east England to 24mm in north-west England (Table 1 and Figure 1). Monthly cumulative rainfall totals to date range from 81% of the September long term average (LTA) in south-east England to 127% in north-east England (Table 1).

River flow

River flows have decreased at nearly three quarters of indicator sites across England although the latest daily mean flows remain normal or higher for the time of year at all but six reporting indicator sites (Figure 2).

Outlook

Unsettled conditions, with several bands of rain, are expected for the remainder of the working week and into the weekend. A band of frontal rain will cross England from the west during Friday with another band expected later on Saturday and into Sunday. The unsettled weather is likely to continue initially but then becoming more changeable with spells of wet and windy weather followed by drier and brighter conditions on Monday and Tuesday.

*Data unavailable for the River Coln at Bibury as thesite is currently under investigation.

2Flow percentiles describe the percentage of time that a particular flow has been equalled or exceeded compared to the historic flow record for that site for the time of year. Flow percentiles presented relate to an analysis for the time of year and not a whole year.
