HOW TO CONDUCT IN 4/4 TIME

You've always wanted to conduct to your CDs?

Here's how to conduct in 4/4 time. You can conduct with just your hand or with a baton. Orchestral conductors usually use batons. Imagine a square in front of your body, and start with your right hand in front of your face. Drop you hand straight to the bottom of the square and stop. This is the down-beat.

For the next beat, move your hand to the left and stop. For the next beat, move your hand to the original position in front of your face. Try the basic pattern a few times. Take out the stops and move your hand continuously while counting one, two, three, four. Remember, (A)___________________________

One element in interpretation is rhythm. Rhythm is measured motion, with regularly recurring beats. When the rhythm is disturbed or interrupted, so that the accents fall in unexpected places, we have syncopation. In our popular of dance music it is known as “offbeat” rhythm.

Another factor in interpretation is dynamics. This is concerned with the volume of sound, in all possible gradual changes from very soft (pianissimo) to very loud (fortissimo). The conductor can achieve sound effects ranging from a whisper to a thunderlike roar.

A third factor is rubato - that is, an occasional change from the fixed tempo. It is accomplished by hurrying a little in one spot and delaying a little in another.

Then there is the element of phrasing. Like a phrase in a sentence, musical phrases must remain distinct, yet at the same time flow along in a continuous current. This is one of the conductor's most challenging and rewarding tasks
