A Study on the LCA Application Scheme of the Construction Industry Areas

1. Objectives and Necessity of Project Development

The purpose of this study is to construct the harmonious green environmental construction with LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), which is a method for objective standardization of environmental contaminated loads causing in the whole process system (life cycle) and to apply into domestic construction industry areas. This study is necessary for the advance and spread in construction-environment technology to build up the global standard of the world best construction technology. It is also required because the green construction will be built with scientific and systematic construction-environment technology, which is a main project established as 'the midterm plan of construction-environment technology development.'

2. Scope and Range

This study conducted an analysis of domestic and foreign new technology policies for driving the construction-environment technology development, an analysis of the green technology status in domestic and foreign construction industry (roads, dams, and habitation sites), a comparison analysis of domestic and foreign technology in green construction industries, and a research analysis of current developing policy programs in foreign construction-environment technology.

This study suggested assessment and application methodology through analyzing the domestic and foreign construction utilizing LCA; LCA applying evaluation in domestic construction industry through researching the foreign case study related the LCA construction.

To build up the LCI DB for the LCA of the construction industry is focused on road

construction. The construction industry unit by basic material thing, the unit by input/output analysis in the construction industry, and the basic unit divided by construction materials and equipments in the industries are suggested in this study.

A midterm plan of the construction-environment technology development was presented in the research including analysis of current domestic construction industry, consideration of constructing strategy on the driving midterm plan, and suggestion of long and short term policy of domestic construction-environment technology.

3. Results

The results of this study are as follows:

It examined and analyzed domestic and foreign new technology policies for driving the construction-environment technology development. In domestic cases, the Korean National Housing Corporation, Korea Institution of Construction Technology, Korea Green Building Association and Korea Energy Management Corporation have studied and researched about the application of green policy. And in foreign cases, BRE, Japan Green Housing Institute, USGBC, Canada Green Building Information Associate have researched and performed it for green environmental harmony and they are proceeding it.

BEES which is a LCA software used for construction materials is made and applied usefully and various conferences are opened for reducing the environmental pollution loads for sustainable development.

And the requirements of the decision system establishment to be applied to huge SOC project such as road construction were researched according to lots of types of scenarios.

The study built up the LCI DB for the LCA of the construction industry focused on road construction such as selecting basic database through the life cycle of the construction industry (design, build-up, maintenance, repairing, destructuring, and recycling) for performance, and using the expanded energy Input-Output analysis for evaluating the environmental impacts of construction material loads.

It established a mid-term plan of the construction-environment technology development. In Korea, relatively, the construction assessment research focused on the LCA conception was examined in small scale fields, but recently, the new study on the

construction-environment technology has been performed with the importance of construction-environment. The SOC projects have to be accelerated because they have been the key succeeding the national base ground until now. The LCA is appropriate to the total and comprehensive method for checking the causing environmental pollution loads of the SOC project.

The application plan suggested in the study includes;

- Producing the environmental impact reduction policy in various material, equipment, plant industries

- Contribution to resource and energy saving․recycling construction

- Systematic technology development program establishment according to the mid-term plan of construction-environment technology

- Suggestion of a resource and energy saving model in the road construction industry - Saving the environmental costs through developing the technology, process and

materials of the green road construction field

- Supporting the specific plan of construction-environmental strategy - Suggestion of a systematic base of green construction technology

- Practical relations with other projects related with the construction of the LCA application, disjointing of buildings, and utilization of recycled aggregates.
