EETINGAt the 9th Economic Policy Coordination Meeting, Minister YOON talked about developing design and service industries, and how to use spatial information efficiently and safely.
Mr. YOON said that design plays a critical role in making products competitive, and Korean enterprises are so good at designing products that some of them have been ranked within 50 best companies at designing in Germany’s IF, one of the three biggest design competitions. However, he continued, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have relatively poor competitiveness in this area, and the government needs to focus its support on SMEs.
Regarding service sector development, the minister said it has been more than three years the government launched the service sector development plan, and it is time to actively seek passing related legislations, in particular the special legislations for Jeju Island and free economic zones, based on which for-profit hospitals and foreign medical services can be introduced. The government will also establish a law to facilitate nurturing service industries so that it can make more systematic efforts to further develop the service sector.
Then he discussed how to use geographic information the government has built up efficiently and safely, and develop spatial information industry, by relaxing regulations and improving access.
Finally Minister YOON touched on the issue of shared growth and market-based competition, and said that as the two ideas may conflict, all ministries need to firmly establish principles based on which shared growth will pursue, and to listen carefully to voices from the field, so that shared growth can successfully be achieved and unnecessary disputes can be prevented.
