Ambassador Mr Yongkyu Park met with a number of New Zealand ministers in Wellington. On 8th May, Ambassador Park visited Minister of Defence Hon Dr Jonathan Coleman at the Minister’s office. At the meeting, they discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in defence area and issues on the Korean Peninsula.

On 9th May, Ambassador met Minister of Immigration and Veterans Affairs Hon Nathan Guy to discuss the Korea-NZ Working Holiday Scheme, ways to increase people-to-people exchange between the two countries and New Zealand Korean War veterans. After this, Ambassador Park also met Minister of Communications, Information & Technology Hon Amy Adams. She is scheduled to visit Korea this week to attend the annual Korea-Australia-New Zealand Broadband Summit (KANZ). They also discussed strengthening cooperation between Korea and New Zealand on developing renewable energy and Korea's participation in New Zealand's infrastructure development.

On 14th May, Ambassador Park also met Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon Murray McCully at the Minister’s office.

They discussed issues of mutual interests including high-level exchange of visits, Korea-New Zealand free trade agreement, other economic cooperation and situation on the Korean Peninsula etc. Ambassador Park also briefed the Minister on various events to celebrate the ‘Korea-New Zealand Year of Friendship’ this year.

AMBASSADOR PARK VISITS VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF WELLINGTON

Ambassador Mr Yongkyu Park met Vice-Chancellor Professor Pat Walsh and Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Roberto Rabel of the Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) at the Kelburn Campus on 8th May. They discussed ways to increase student exchange between the Victoria University of Wellington and universities in Korea, and to cooperate in Antarctic research. Victoria University of Wellington is a leading research institute for Antarctic studies.

At the meeting, Ambassador Park also introduced the Korean Government's two English teaching programmes, the English Programm in Korea (EPIK, www.epik.go.kr) and the Teach and Learn in Korea (TaLK, www.talk.govt.nz). The number of New Zealanders applying for these programmes has been increasing in the past few years.

Professor Walsh said that there are about 40 Korean students studying at the Victoria University of Wellington who are registered as international students.

This year’s New Zealand Sister Cities Conference was held at Te Papa from 9th to 11th May. The 2012 Conference was focused on four countries, the U.S, Japan, Korea and China, having 70th, 60th, 50th and 40th diplomatic anniversaries with New Zealand respectively. Prime Minister Rt Hon John Key made congratulatory remarks at the opening ceremony on 9th May.

The Korea Session held on the next day was addressed by Ambassador Mr Yongkyu Park, Melissa Lee MP Parliamentary Private Secretary for Ethnic Affairs, Mr Phil Tappenden Chairman of Christchurch Songpa-Gu Sister City Committee, and Mr Fergus McLean Executive Director of the Korea-New Zealand Business Council.

With a five-minute video clip introducing Korea, Ambassador Park spoke about Korea and New Zealand’s diplomatic relationship of the last 50 years. He hoped that the sister cities relationship between the two countries will further enhance people-to-people exchanges between Korea and New Zealand. Currently, Korea has two sister city relations with New Zealand; Songpa-Gu with Christchurch and Busan with Auckland.
