The Dunedin School of Art at Otago Polytechnic is welcoming Korean artist Hyeryne Park to Dunedin for a three-month residency from 11th September.
Park creates art using a range of materials such as textiles, wood and cardboard. The artist plans to spend her initial time in New Zealand experiencing the landscape. She will then create works in response to the landscape from her studio in the Dunedin School of Art. While in residency at the school, Park will also give feedback to art students and present an exhibition of her work at the Dunedin School of Art Gallery in November. Work created in Dunedin will add to an ongoing series called “Project Nomad” – where Park has created three-dimensional responses to vast landscapes (such as the Grand Canyon).
The residency is part of an exchange arrangement between the Asia New Zealand Foundation (Asia:NZ) and National Art Studio, Goyang, Korea. With the support of Creative New Zealand, Asia:NZ also sends one New Zealand artist to Korea annually. Park’s residency launches a new collaborative relationship between the Asia:NZ Foundation and the Dunedin School of Art Foundation. The Dunedin School of Art Foundation was recently established to grow opportunities for the arts in the Dunedin community and to add value to art education in the city.
Asia:NZ culture director Jennifer King says the foundation is delighted to have the Dunedin School of Art hosting Park. “It’s great to see a residency offered outside Auckland and Wellington.
We hope it is the start of a long-term partnership.”
