Luminescence Properties of Ba 3 SiO 5 :Eu 2+ Powder Phosphors Prepared by Using Solid-state Reaction

2+powder phosphors were synthesized by using the solid-state reaction method. The surface morphology, crystallinity and luminescence properties of the powder samples were analyzed as a function of the sintering temperature. The particle size of the powder increased with increasing sintering temperature. A phase transition occurred from Ba
2SiO
4to Ba
3SiO
5when the sintering temperature exceeded 1100
◦C. The photoluminescence (PL) and the PL excitation (PLE) spectra showed a broad excitation band from 200 to 500 nm with two strong emission peaks, one each at 506 and 570 nm. The PL intensity of the 506 nm peak of the powders sintered at 1300
◦C was 6 times higher than that of the samples sintered at 1100
◦C. The results confirm that the Ba
3SiO
5:Eu
2+powder can be used as a phosphor material for the use in near-ultraviolet-based white-light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
