이 책의 저자는 “나의 문화유산답사기”로 잘 알려진 명지대의 미술사학과에 재직중인 유홍준 교수 다. “안목”이란 꼭 미를 보는 눈에만 국한하는 말이 아니고 세상을 보는 눈 모두에 해당하지만, 그 본령 은 역시 예술을 보는 눈이라고 작가는 말하고 있다. 그래서 이 책에서 작가는 우리나라의 훌륭한 역대 안목들이 미를 어떻게 보았고 그 안목을 어떻게 실천했는가를 소개하였다. 이 책은 크게 네 개의 장으로 구성되어 있으며 제1장에서는 미를 보는 눈을 감상하고, 제2장의 애호가 열전을 통해 안목을 기를 수 있 는 길을 제시하고, 3장의 회고전 순례에서는 변월룡, 이중섭, 박수근, 오윤, 신영복의 작품들을 소개하 고 있다. 마지막 장에서는 수화 김환기의 작가론, 대가들의 종이작업에 대한 평론과, 1980년대의 미술을 소개하고 있다. 다른 지역을 여행할 때 아는 만큼 보인다는 말이 있는데 예술작품도 마찬가지 인듯하다.
작가는 예술분야에 문외한인 사람도 예술품에 대한 감동이 느껴질 수 있도록 풍부한 지식과 애정을 가 지고 각각의 작품에 대해 설명하고 있다. 박물관이나 전시회를 가면 그냥 지루할 때가 많았는데 이제는 애정을 가지고 작품을 보려고 노력해야겠다는 결심이 서기도 한다. 책 한권으로 예술이나 세상에 대한 안목이 트이지는 않겠지만 이 책은 우리의 안목이 트이는데 많은 도움이 될 것 같다. 이 책은 읽는 내내 우리 조상이 남긴 작품에 대한 작가의 애정이 느껴져서 지루하지 않게 읽을 수 있을 것 같다.
