More discussion on acquisition
• L2 acquisition:
Second language acquisition (or second language learning) = learning a language after fully acquiring a first language
• •Open question: Does second language learning work the same way as first
language acquisition? - No!
Differences between L1 acquisition and L2 learning
• L1 acquisition by children is effortless and fast.
• L2 learning by adults often requires focused effort and tends to be slower.
• L2 learning can be facilitated by explicit instruction.
• Adults rarely achieve native competence in L2
• Certain errors often persist in L2
• Also: everyone acquires an L1 regardless of intelligence level.
• L2 learning varies widely across individuals, and often correlated with intelligence.
Age and L2 acquisition
• The phonology and phonetics of a new language are very difficult to acquire in L2 learning.
• The younger you start learning, the less of an accent you have.
⇒ The brain becomes less flexible as it becomes older.
• Not a strong distinction between those who start learning before puberty and those who start
learning after, which indicates that the critical
period hypothesis may not apply to L2 acquisition.
Other factors related to L2 acquisition
The following factors are considered the most
important determining how much of an L2 accent a speaker had:
1. Age at which learning starts
2. Length of residence in L2-speaking environment 3. Ability to imitate foreign accents and dialects
4. Media input (TV, movies, radio) 5. Interest in learning language
6. Economic motivation
7. L1 fluency can be affected by L2.
언어처리
Language Processing
Language Processing
The big question: 어떻게 언어가 인간의 두뇌에서 처리되는가?
Issue 1: Comprehension
• Recognition of spoken, signed, or written words
• Comprehension of words and sentences Issue 2: Production
• Selecting words and planning sentences
• Producing speech, signed language, or written language
Language Processing Model
1. 언어처리 (language processing)가
‘bottom up’ 방식으로 처리됨
- 청각적/시각적 신호에서 의미적 해석으로 넘어감.
- 감각상/지각적 자료와 어휘정보를 바탕으로 언어 구조를 세워나감.
- Lower level (sound) Higher level (structure/meaning)
Top-down
2. Top-down processing
- 통사/의미 정보로부터 어휘정보를 이해해 나감.
- Higher level (structure/meaning) Lower level (sound)
• 언어를 프로세싱하는 과정은 상위 레벨과 연관된 활동들이 있음. 단어 지각 (word recognition)
• 단어 지각 현상은 Top-down processing을 지지함.
• Word recognition에게 영향을 줄 수 있는 것 i) priming
ii) 단어가 사용되는 빈도수 iii) 주변에 있는 단어들.
iv) 통사구조
Word recognition
Task: lexical decision
• Subjects see:
BOOK (word)
OKOB (non-word)
- 실험자는 주어진 것이 단어인지 아닌지 결정
• 측정- 정확도 - 반응시간
• Idea: 반응시간이 길면, 언어처리 과정이 연관되어 있다고 볼 수 있음.
Priming
• Priming: 주어진 단어에 의해 단어 뜻을 유추할 수 있는 것
• Ex: “splash” is preceded by “fountain”
• Ex: “Bible” is preceded by “sermon”
- “splash”가 주변의 주어진 단어에 의해 priming되면 단어를 이해하는 정확도가 높아지고, 반응 시간도 더 짧아진다.
의미적 연관이 언어 처리 시간을 단축시켜 줄 수 있음
Frequency effects
• 빈도수가 높게 사용되는 단어들은 더 쉽게 이해가 되고 더 정확하게 이해가 됨.
Neighborhood Effects
• 주어진 단어 주변에 음운적으로 비슷한 단어가 주어지는 경우:
• Lexical item: rat
• Neighbors: rash, gnat, rant, rapt, rot, right, bat, cat...
- 음운론적으로 비슷한 단어가 더 많이
주어지는 경우, target word를 알아보기가 더 힘들어짐.
- 언어학적 연상작용
Slips of the Ear
• 어느 단어를 정확하게 듣지 못한 경우,
주변의 단어와 비슷하게 듣는 경우가 있음.
• death in Venice → deaf in Venice
• the biggest hurdle → the biggest turtle
• I’m getting married next week →
• I’m getting buried next week.
• 만일 단어 경계가 정확하게 구분되지
못하면, 문장 이해가 어려워지고 복잡해짐.
• a coke and a danish → a coconut Danish
• the stuffy nose → the stuff he knows
• there’s a bad moon on the rise →
• there’s a bathroom on the right
Mental lexicon
• Semantic priming, frequency effects, neighborhood effects: mental lexicon의 존재를 입증
• Semantic priming: 인간의 머리속에 있는
‘사전’들이 의미적으로 비슷한 단어들끼리 연관되어 있다는 것을 보여줌.
• Frequency effects: 더 자주 사용되는
단어가 ‘사전’의 맨 위에 위치하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있음.
• Neighborhood effects: 음운론적으로 비슷한 단어들이 ‘사전’에서 경쟁을 함
Mental Lexicon (continued)
• 단어를 이해한다는 것은 단어와 연관된 모든 의미를 연관시킨다.
Ex: “Palm” primes both “tree” and “hand”
“Mouse” primes both “rat” and
“computer”
• 단어에 관한 통사/의미적 정보를 얻는
과정을 ‘어휘 접근 (lexical access)라 함.
Lexical Access Effects
• Lexical acess는 단어에 통사적 정보와 연관되어 있음.
- “bring”은 NP 목적어를 취함.
- “search”는 for + N과 함께 씌임.
[fɔr prɛzənts]
= NP “four presents”
= PP “for presents”
• 문장 해석은 문맥에 따라 달라짐.
- The kids are searching PP/*NP - The kids are bringing *PP/NP
Syntactic Processing
• 이미 가지고 있는 어휘 정보에 따라 청자는 문장을 해석함.
• 문장을 해석할 때 통사적 정보를 이용함.
The Garden Path
• 문장을 해석하는 중 새로운 정보가 나오면 문장 해석이 중단되는 경우를 가리켜
‘garden path sentences’라 함.
• 많은 garden path sentences가 ‘reduced relative clauses’와 연관있음
- The boat floated down the river sank.
- After the child visited the doctor prescribed a course of injections.
- They told the boy that the girl met the story.
Speech production
• Speech errors (slips of the tongue) - Speech errors의 형태는 언어단위
(linguistic units)이 speech production에 연관되어 있다는 것을 보여줌.
Speech errors의 형태
i) 음성적 자질 (phonetic features)이 서로 인접한 음소끼리 바뀜.
ii) 어느 음성 요소가 발화에서 예상한 것보다 먼저 나옴 (anticipation)
• the hiring of minority faculty → the firing of minority faculty
• 전체 형태소가 서로 바뀜 (metathesis) a floor full of holes → a hole full of floors many ministers in our church → many churches in our minister.
• 통사구 전체가 치환될 수도 있음
Jake sliced the salami with a knife → Jake sliced a knife with the salami
• 이러한 형태는 speech production이 다음 언어 단위와 연관되어 있음을 보여줌:
음성자질, 음소, 형태소, 통사구
• Speech errors는 음운규칙을 지킴
many ministers in our church → many churches in our minister Freudian slip → fleudian shrip funny song → sunny fong
funny song → *ngunny sof
• 이러한 예는 speech production에
음운규칙이 연관되어 있음을 보여줌.
