Early months of Gombe, Africa were a time of delight discovery, for I learned something new each day about the chimpanzees. As I got to know them as individuals, I

named them. I had no idea that the

ethological discipline of the early 1960s, this was inappropriate - I should have given them more objective numbers. I also described their vivid personalities, which was another sin because only humans were believed to have personalities at that time. It was an even worse crime to admit that the chimpanzees had human-like emotions. In those days it was held that only humans had mind, and only humans were capable of rational thought.

Like the prices of products in markets, interest rates

follow . As banks run short of money

available for loans, interest rates go high. Higher interest rates lead people to save money. This process results in piling up dollars, which makes new loans possible. On the other hand, when the banks have enough money to loan, they lower interest rates. The lowered interest rates make people lose their desire for depositing money. Consequently, less money flows into the banks, which will decrease the money they keep.

Instead of firing workers at difficult times, some companies cut off salary and a few hours from everybody’s workweek. While workers do not have to worry about being fired, companies can keep the good quality of the work because they still have experienced workers. 다음 글에서 작가에 대한 설명과 일치하지 않는 것은? [1점] Once upon a time there was a writer from Denmark whose stories were filled with tragedy. Critics disliked his conversational writing style. However, his revised tales became best-selling children’s books in the neighboring lands of Germany and Britain. Then the Danish praised their storyteller as the genius creator of a new literary genre, a fairy tale. In spite of his fame, he lived a miserable life and died alone in 1875 at the age of 70, far from “living happily ever after.” The storyteller was Hans Christian Andersen, and this year is the bicentennial of his birth.

Overworked doctors who are short of sleep are not only a potential danger to patients but also a danger on the road. A professor in Harvard Medical School surveyed 2,700 medical doctors who worked at the hospitals affiliated to universities in America. He divided all the doctors into the two groups; a 24-hour shift group and a 12-hour shift one. Doctors in a 24-hour shift were 3 times more likely to have a car accident than those working 12-hour shift. But some hospitals still don’t provide beds for doctors, so they can’t help driving home after long shifts. This condition should be taken into careful consideration. * affiliated 부속된

What most people don’t realize is how many times each day they make routine assumptions about the intention of the other speaker. Good listening requires you not to assume anything about the intention of a speaker. This rule is especially true in conversations with your family, friends, and co-workers. You know how they use words. This familiarity can lead you to believe that you understand their point, without carefully considering what they are actually saying to you. Be careful not to jump to conclusions about the speakers’ intentions, especially with those who are close to you.

How can you find out if you and your wife or husband are likely to be a good couple? In an attempt to answer it, some psychologists studied married couples and found that there are several types of couples. ( ① ) One type is the “calm-calm” couple, both of whom are so calm that they hardly show their anger or excitement. ( ② ) They almost never fight, almost never get angry, and live a happy life together. ( ③ ) They often argue and sometimes have fights, but they are more romantic than other types of couples. Last spring some of our students were visiting another city. While they stayed there, they decided not to use their slang. However, in spite of their efforts, they found that (a) “embarrassing monsters” kept appearing in their conversations. This was an example of using undesirable language which we find common in our school. The students seem to speak (b) foreign languages to anyone outside the school. (c) This unique slang often prevents the students from expressing themselves clearly in conversations, classroom talks, and other situations.

Here is another example of a senior boy, who depends too much upon slang and fails to build a large vocabulary. He lost a chance to get a job because he didn’t know the meaning of the word, “vivacious”, which should be in any (d) sophomore’s working vocabulary.

We should not forget that although slang is understood here, (e) our favorite words will get us in trouble when we are in college or in the business world. * vivacious 쾌활한

The political leaders in the European Union calls (A) one of the most threatening issues that we are facing today. TV and newspapers warn of intense hurricanes, mega-droughts, famine, and the extinction of the human race. However, the world’s top economists have different opinions. They say “This is a Hollywood fiction. Such exaggeration has prevented us from asking ourselves where we can spend our money as efficiently as possible for the Third World.” When they met at Copenhagen last May, they asked that very question. They ranked Global Warming at the (B) of the priority list.

There are many better ways to help the poor in the Third World than by fighting against global warming. Directly dealing with the most urgent issues such as disease, hunger, and polluted water will help the most. Poverty is a huge problem, which causes these issues now. This does not mean we should ignore climate change. But it does mean that there are far better ways to spend $150 billion a year. The world political leaders should give up their unreasonable beliefs in (C) threat of climate changes and start to do some real good for poor people in the Third World.

“Please mister... please, I’m sorry... I didn’t know what else to do,” the kid said. “I threw the brick because no one else would stop. My brother fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up.” Now crying, the boy asked the man, “Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair?” The man was moved beyond words. He lifted the boy’s brother back into the wheelchair, then took out his handkerchief and wiped the cuts. “Thank you and may God bless you,” the grateful child said to him.

(B)

The man simply watched the little boy push his brother down the sidewalk toward their home. It was a long, slow walk back to the sports car. He never did repair the side door to remind him of this message: don’t go through life so fast. Someone might have to throw a brick to stop you.

(C)

A young and successful businessman was driving a bit too fast in his new sports car. He was watching a kid running out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something.
