Development of an Instrument to Measure the Speed of Sound by Using the Robotstudy Kit

We developed an inexpensive and easy-to-use instrument to measure the speed of sound by using the following Robotstudy kit components: ATmega8535 and two microphones. The advantages of this apparatus are readily available parts, case of easy assembling to make, simple programming for operation, and real-time display of results. This instrument measures the travel time of sound pulses between the two microphones. We measured the speed of sound waves in various media, such as gases, solids, and liquids, by employing this instrument. It’s applicability to the middle-school and the high-school curricula was investigated, and the results were affirmative.
