KNU, the Leader in the Development of Emergency Medical In- frastructure for Companion Animals in the Community

KNU held the opening ceremony of Kangwon National University Animal Hospital Emergency Room on July 6. It has a total floor area of 59.5㎡ and is equipped with facilities, including emergency and treatment rooms, Intensive Care Unit(ICU), and ward for large dogs. With the opening of the emergency room at the animal hospital, KNU will open a new chapter in the development of the emergency medical infrastructure for companion animals, which has been lacking in the local community and will further help Chuncheon to become a “mecca of the companion animal industry.”

Leap Forward as a Institution Specialized for Supplying Tech- nology and Manpower Tailored to Local Industries

KNU has been selected for the phase 2 main project of the 「2022 Local Industry-Linked University Open-Lab Fos- tering Support Project」 organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Commercializations Promotion Agency for R&D Outcomes. This project is to establish a technology commercialization platform that provides our university's excellent technology and human resources to small and medium-sized businesses in the local special- ized industry by designating our university's research lab as an open lab, and the Industry-University Cooperation Foundation will designate and intensively foster six open labs and companies in the fields of natural biomaterials, new ceramic composite materials, and ICT convergence health industries with a budget of about 1.8 billion won.

This initiative will provide an opportunity for KNU to improve not only the competitiveness of the open lab for the local strategic industries, but also to create high-quality jobs.

KNU Takes the Lead in Promoting Overseas Exchange and Co- operation

# Obtained a total of 10.8 billion won in research fund- ing from the National Research Foundation of Korea and the Korean Fund for Regenerative Medicine

KNU Increased Technology Transfer Revenue by 58.3%

To promote overseas exchange and cooperation, KNU visited Peru from July 17th to 26th. President Heon Young Kim visited the National University of Engineering (Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería) and presented a keynote under the theme of “University's Role in Technological Advancement” and had time to actively seek ways to pro- mote exchanges of students and scholarships between the two universities. Moreover, KNU signed an Exchange and Cooperation MOU with the University of Lima to exchange students and faculty members for symposiums and seminars and to conduct academic conferences and joint research projects. KNU's vigorous efforts to provide a va- riety of education and attract excellent international students will continue in the future.

RESEARCH NEWS

Professor Seok-Ho Hong, Department of Medicine

In 2021, KNU achieved an outstanding result, a total of 1.9 billion won in technology transfer revenue (profits gen- erated when a technology researched and developed by a professor is transferred to a company and successfully commercialized), which is a 58.3% increase from the 1.2 billion won in 2017. KNU was selected for “Beyond Re- search Innovation & Development for Good Enterprises+” by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea in 2018 and has supported the tailored implementation and commercialization of the univer- sity's technologies, including product and demand analysis of partner companies to promote commercialization based on corporate demand. As such, KNU's unsparing support will continue so the university and companies can create many win-win success stories.

Professor Seok-Ho Hong of the Department of Internal Medicine at the School of Medicine and the director of KNU Institute of Medical Science was selected for both the “Next-generation Bio Social-based Support Project” of the National Research Foundation of Korea and “Regenerative Medical Technology Develop- ment Project” of the Korean Fund for Regenerative Medicine.

# Dedicated in development of pulmonary fibrosis pathogenesis and treatment strategy

Professor Hong's research team will receive a total of 10.8 billion won in research funding for “Identification of the etiolo- gy of respiratory diseases caused by exposure to Korean fine dust and development of control technology" and "Pulmo- nary fibrosis modeling of alveolar organoids and drug development based on gene editing technology.”

Through this project, the team will study the establishment and utilization of an integrated platform using alveolar organ- oids-human samples-animal models for the development of mechanisms and treatment technologies for pulmonary fibrosis caused by recent fine dust, coronavirus infection and genetic mutations.

In addition, Professor Seok-Ho Hong has applied for two patents in the field of intellectual property rights through Indus- try-University Cooperation, including “Composition for Treating Asherman Syndrome Comprising Perivascular Stem Cell Medium or Cyclophilin A”, and has carried out six technology transfers, including “Hematopoietic Differentiation of Human Pluripotent Stem Cells in a Developmental Stage-Specific Manner.”

Rachmi Luthfikasari, Majoring in Bio- systems Engineering

# Plant-actuated micro/nanorobotics platform : struc- tural design, functional prospects, and biomedical applications

# Development of micro/nanorobotics platform for bio- medical application using plant-sourced biomimetic technology

Rachmi Luthfikasari (from Indonesia), who is enrolled in the master’s course in Biosystems Engineering, published a review paper in Wiley’s 「Small」 journal.

The title of Rachmi’s review paper is ‘Plant-actuated micro/nanorobotics plat- form : structural design, functional prospects, and biomedical applications’ and

contains the review of the micro-nano robotics platform research, adapting plant structural and functional systems through strategic biomimetic.

In this review, she explained several possibilities to utilize the unique structures and physiological systems of plants (sur- face roughness, osmotically induced movements such as nastic and tropic, and energy conversion and harvesting) and adapt them into new emerging technologies through a strategic biomimetic approach such as nanoparticles, nanofibers, and their composites, nanoporous materials, and natural micromotors. Furthermore, these technologies can be utilized to design suitable materials for a micro–nanorobot platform, especially for biomedical applications in the future.

Rachmi’s current research focuses on developing a pollen-based antibacterial micro platform, and she will continue to de- velop plant-based materials to support sustainable engineering.
