Middle School Students’ Understanding of Ratio in Basic Physical Concepts

To determine middle school students’ understanding of ratio, we prepared a questionnaire. The questionnaire included a few questions to check students’ abilities to calculate and explain algebraic ratios involving concrete physical quantities, symbolic quantities, and inverse ratios. The subjects were students from one middle-school class from each of the three grades. The results showed that the students understood concrete quantities, but not abstract ones. They could not explain what a ratio meant; rather, they thought of fractions as merely numerical symbols for the given quantities.
