Analysis of Visual Materials in High-school Physics I Textbooks

The purpose of this study was to investigate the following visual (non-text) materials in high- school physics-I textbooks: the proportion of visual materials to total pages of text (as measured by the number of pages devoted to each), the types and functions of the visual materials, and the ratio of male to females in the visual materials. The proportion of visual materials to total pages of text averaged 25.09 % in 5 kinds of high-school physics-I textbooks, and the result showed an even distribution of visual materials in each chapter of the physics-I textbooks. Among the types of visual materials, the ratio of pictures and diagrams to total text was the highest while the ratio of cartoons and graphs was relatively low. Among the functions, such as experiments, student motivation, information provision, reference and experimental results contained in physics- I textbooks. The visual materials were used mostly to explain of physical concepts. The ratio of males to females represented in the visual materials was about 2.39 : 1.03.
