Information on the legalisation of documents intended for use abroad In accordance with Section 15(2) of Act XLVI of 2001 on consular protection, for the purpose of use abroad, the minister responsible for foreign policy legalises the signature and stamp on documents issued by

Hungarian central state administrative bodies, or organisations, public bodies or persons authorised by statute or by government decree to exercise administrative authority.

The documents must be endorsed with an Apostille certificate or “classic” ministerial legalisation dependent on the state whose authority requires them.

With regard to the states party to the Apostille Convention signed at the Hague on 5 October 1961 abolishing the requirement of diplomatic or consular certification (legalisation) for public documents to be used abroad (hereinafter the “Apostille Convention”), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade applies an Apostille to all documents specified in Legislative Decree 11 of 1973 enacting the Convention in

Hungary. The continuously updated list of the states party to the Convention is to be found on the page http://www.hcch.net/index_en.php?act=conventions.status&cid=41 (http://www.hcch.net/index_en.php?

act=conventions.status&cid=41). In these cases the document can be used in any state party to the Convention without any further legalisation.
