Development of Transgenic Crops and Research Projects for Biotechnology Application

A B S T R A C T Th e main ob jective of this top ic is to estab lish strategies an d to plan bio techno lo gy researches which a re related to th e ag ricu ltural imp rove men ts especially fo cusing on the crop breedin g in Kore a. From 1 96 0 's to 1 9 80 's g overn ment p olicy h ad been emp hasized to d evelop e h ig h y ielding cultivars for th e s elf su fficien t su p ply of th e stap le foo d cro ps. As a result, c on sid era ble in creas e o f rice prod uction has b een made with accu mula tin g te chn olog y and man 's p owers. Re cently g enetically mo dified cro ps h arb orin g u sefu l ch aracteristics h ave been d evelo ped usin g b iotech nolog y an d released in the d evelop ed cou ntries. Natio nal resea rch institutes and private compa nies have b een d evelop ed b iotech no log y research es to es ta blish co mpetitive capab ilities, ho wever they h ave n ot been successfully u sed in co mmercialization . Therefo re it is n ecess ary to promote th e p ractical ap plication b y conn ecting molecular techn olo gy with co nven tion al b reeding . Prop o sed resea rch p ro jects are; (1) b asic research es includ in g plan t gen o me stu dies, (2 ) d evelop in g n ew c ultivars th ro ug h gen e transformatio n, (3 ) screen in g an d p ro du cing antio xid ants , secon dary metabolite su bstances and edib le vaccin es. To s et a go vernmen t p o licy, bo th d omestic a nd in ternation al resea rch tren ds were reviewed and po ssibility of succes s based on th e econo mic view p o in t were discu ssed. Th e intellectu al p ro p erty and p reserva tio n o f env iro nmen t p lay a k ey role to decide th e research p rio rity. It is als o n ecessary for us to mak e one step system for the d istributio n o f research resou rces su ch as micro org anisms, gen es clon ed, pla nt seed s and research information s fo r promotin g research a ctivities.
