Stress has been recognized as an important factor in health. While we might perceive it as merely a ㈎ , it can be very dangerous. Unfortunately, our life styles have made stress nearly unavoidable. We often take pride in being too busy and in working punishingly long hours. The result can be an ㈏ to stress.

Chronic stress can lead to premature aging and poor health.

Our bodies are constantly trying to maintain a ⓐbalanced state. They react to any disturbance by trying to bring the body back into balance. Strictly speaking, dictionaries do not define words; they record meanings that actual usage, past and present, has attached to words. When more than one meaning is recorded for a single word, Webster’s Collegiate lists them in order of historical use, earliest meaning first. Most other dictionaries list the most common or frequently used, most general, or most basic meaning first. Thus it is important to know a dictionary’s system of ㈎ , explained in the volume’s prefatory pages, and to read all the meanings in an entry before choosing ⓐthe one that best suits the context in which you plan to use the word.
