Review of the Republic of Kuwait Geneva, 28 January, 2015

Statement of the Republic of Korea

Thank you, Mr. President.

We note the progress that has been made since the first review of Kuwait in 2010, ranging from the establishment of various national mechanisms for human rights to the promulgation of numerous legislative enactments and measures in favor of women, children and persons with disabilities.

In the hope that Kuwait continues to build on these achievements, we respectfully make the following three recommendations:

First, Kuwait takes appropriate measures to protect the human rights of foreign migrant workers in linkage with the efforts to modify the Kafala (sponsorship) system.

Second, Kuwait takes necessary steps to facilitate the process of qualifying stateless individuals to be granted nationality so that they can enjoy basic human rights.

Third, Kuwait takes appropriate measures to address concerns over having withdrawn citizenship of naturalized Kuwaiti citizens.
