This is the means by which a person or a business makes a living from creativity. It springs from a simple notion : only the people that produce creative work can decide how that work should be reproduced. It has been included in international laws for more than 200 years. Before I became a professional writer, I spent much time learning how to write and got through a very tiresome training in the effort to make my works beautiful and splendid. But I abandoned these efforts when my plays began to be reproduced. I started my work again with a different aim. I sought _______. As I wanted to say so many things within reasonable limits, I felt that I could not afford to waste words. I set out now with the notion of using only necessary words to make my meaning clear. I had no space for ornament.

④ imagination ⑤ simplicity

Our brain is incredibly efficient. Although we talk at a rate of 120 or 150 words a minute, the brain can process 400 to 800 words a minute. This would seem to make listening an easy job, but actually it has the opposite effect. Because we can take in a speaker’s words and still have plenty of spare “brain time,” we are tempted to interrupt our listening by thinking about other things. And thinking about other things is just what we do. In short, _____________ is the main cause of poor listening.

① speaking fast ② strong accent ③ low intelligence ④ not concentrating ⑤ unfamiliar vocabulary

26.

I’m trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add brilliance to my life. So, I’m not “saving” anything; I’m using my good china and crystal to celebrate even small events such as losing a pound of fat or the first rose blossom. I’m wearing my good perfume for clerks in the hardware store and tellers at the bank instead of saving it for special parties. I’m sitting in the yard and admiring the view without worrying about the weeds in the garden. “Someday” and “one of these days” don’t appeal to me. My theory is very simple: “______________________.”

[3점] ① Be prepared for the future

② Cherish these moments now ③ Learn from others’ failures ④ Get along with others around you ⑤ Think twice before going into action

다음 글이 주는 교훈을 속담으로 가장 잘 나타낸 것은? At life’s crossroads, people meet with unfortunate situations that give them longstanding impressions. It is life’s unexplained theory that times that give sorrow seem to last forever. But there is light at the end of the dark tunnel. In every disaster there is something hidden which is perhaps a hope, a promise of better things or a reward for everything that is lost. Little do people understand this and that’s why many of us cannot endure bad times. Those who have known this have got over bad times.

① Every cloud has a silver lining. ② Many hands make light work. ③ Too many cooks spoil the broth. ④ Blood is thicker than water.

⑤ Necessity is the mother of invention.

At our last sale, just as we finished putting everything out, a middleaged man arrived and ran into the hall. He went directly to the stall where clothes were sold. Still redfaced and out of breath, he pulled two sports jackets and a few suits off the clothes rack. Then he marched over to the payment table, where a puzzled volunteer asked if everything was all right. “I don’t know what the world is coming to,” the man said in an injured tone. “This is the third year running my wife has given my favorite clothes to this sale!”

A mother’s milk has just the right amount of fat, sugar, water, and protein that is needed for a baby’s growth and development. Most babies find it easier to digest breast milk than they do formula. Breast milk has agents called antibodies in it to help protect infants from bacteria and viruses and to help them fight off infection and disease. Breastfeeding saves time and money. You do not have to purchase, measure, and mix formula, and there are no bottles to warm in the middle of the night. Breastfeeding also helps a mother bond with her baby. Physical contact is important to newborns and can help them feel more secure, warm and comforted. * formula 분유

“Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it,” said David Starr Jordan. Most of us know what we need to do in order to live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. The real problem is that we don’t do what we know. Too often, we spend our days waiting for the ideal path to appear. We forget that paths are made by walking, not waiting. Dreaming is great. But thinking big thoughts alone will not build a business, pay your bills, or make you into the person you want to be. The smallest of actions is always better than the boldest of intentions.

You can also get full value if you have less than half of each bill, but you can prove that the rest was destroyed.

The Puritans of New England built houses that were similar to the ones that they had left across the ocean. Simple wooden structures with brick chimneys and steep, pitched roofs were the norm. The thatched straw that had been used for roofs in England was replaced by shingles, which proved to be less of a fire hazard and offered better protection against the weather. The houses were solidly constructed and included such ornamental details as iron door handles and fancy brickwork. Many fine examples of those seventeenth century homes remain standing throughout the New England region. *shingle 널판자

I have always taken it for granted that pockets are places to put things into, and have stuffed my pockets with anything that would go into them ― newspapers, letters, erasers, pens, and so on. I once found eleven pens in the pockets of a suit I was wearing. Yet even as a boy I was discouraged from making this natural use of my pockets. I was told that, if you put things into your pockets, you spoiled the shape of your suit. This seems to me as ridiculous as it would be to say that, if you put potatoes into a sack, you spoil the shape of the sack. My inside breast pocket, stuffed with unanswered letters, may spoil the shape of my suit; but I dress for use, not for beauty. The same is true with everything else.

When you think of the word “conflict,” you generally picture shouting, anger, or stressful confrontations. It is generally viewed as negative, having disharmony and hostility. Necessarily, it leads to the win or lose scenario ― someone is going to win and someone is going to lose. But it is not the case with all of the conflicts. Conflict is always difficult, but it sometimes leads to growth and change in organizations. No one likes pain, but pain wakes you up and tells you when to react. When conflict exists in an organization, it generally indicates the members are trying to come up with the best solution. This in turn promotes challenge and increases effort. This type of conflict is necessary.

When I first saw The Artist’s Way on the shelf of my favorite bookstore years ago when I was still practicing law, I did not pick it up. At that time, I believed it was only for “artists” and that I would, therefore, not benefit from it. Over time, however, I realized that everyone has an almost limitless wellspring of creativity deep within us. And we all need to use this creativity on a daily basis to get the most from life, whether we are lawyers, homemakers, teachers, business executives, poets, or musicians. The realization that I, as a lawyer, was a creative being brought a whole new awareness to me.

As long as humans have lived on Earth, the day has been 24 hours long. But humans are just newcomers in the history of the planet. Not long after Earth formed more than four billion years ago, a day was less than ten hours long. Four hundred million years ago there were 400 days in a year which lasted 22 hours a day. Why the changes? Earthquakes, ice ages and even hurricanes have an effect. But the greatest influence comes from tidal friction, or gravitational forces between Earth and the moon. Tidal friction causes the planet to spin more slowly, so that our day is getting longer by 20 seconds every million years. No need to adjust your clock anytime soon.

Person (A) - I am writing about the editorial concerning the mall proposed near Seven Springs Lake. I regret that my hometown newspaper opposes this promising project. It will bring employment to hundreds of residents and greatly improve the economic conditions. The editorial expressed concern about the environmental damage that would be done by building the mall. I understand this concern, but these fears are unfounded. Perhaps you are unaware that the construction company has agreed to retain many of the trees that are now growing on the property. Surely this reflects a sincere desire on the company’s part to protect the environment. Is the loss of a few frogs and fish worth a high unemployment rate in our town? I do not think so. Do we want to remain behind the times, or do we want to march forward? I certainly hope the latter is true.

Person (B) - Thank you for the excellent editorial that appeared in Sunday’s paper opposing the proposed Seven Springs Mall. I, too, oppose this project, and I have obtained more than two thousand signatures during the campaign against the plan. The time has come for us to listen to environmentalists. I am not opposed to progress. I question, however, whether another vast area of steel, glass, and concrete really represents progress. We already have so many industrial and commercial areas. Progress means moving forward, or improving. Are we, in fact, improving our environment by destroying natural habitats like forests, lakes, and meadows that are home to many living creatures? Is this moving forward? Nature is everyone’s mother. I hope all the citizens will join the thousands who took part in the campaign against the project. Let us move forward and improve by . That will be true progress.

Italy, however, was an exception and a number of local scientific societies did admit women. It’s not surprising, then, that the one woman who crashed the barriers built against women was an Italian, Laura Bassi. She became a respected scientist at a time when women were considered intellectually limited for scientific study. She disproved the notion that women and the sciences were opposed to one another.
