Nowadays, however, power and authority tend to be shared between husband and wife. Men have started taking responsibility for household chores mostly done by women in the past. They also shop for groceries and toys. Women today have a much greater voice in decisions about purchases and lifestyle. For instance, automakers have found that women constitute a large portion of their consumer market, and they have made a change in car designs accordingly.

(B)

The American women today are very different from the ones a half century ago. In the fifties, husbands were usually considered the leaders of the family. They were the ones who made the major buying decisions and distributed income. The wife’s main role was to take care of the home. But even here, she based her actions largely on what would please or help her husband.

(C)

Although changes in the family have been rightly attributed to feminist demands for equality, there is another source for the marked shift in power relations. In the current economy, it’s usually essential that both spouses work full-time, and wives who bring in half the family’s income are far less willing to turn major decisions over to their husbands than wives in the 1950s.
